Actually, from a Republican perspective, I think it's still best to hope they don't succeed. I honestly believe the Democrats take a bigger hit if nothing passes than if something does, because it has become a test of their ability to govern. And a test of their ability to recognize that fact.

Pass something and it will fade from the headlines. Pass nothing and it will be an albatross around their neck. What you want them to do is validate the old cliche:

“We (republicans) don't really know what we want to do, but we know how to do something. They (democrats) know exactly what they want to do, but they don't know how to do anything.”

No it won't.

It will grow into an out of control monster, just like everything else the federal government touches.
