Updated: in the local people meter markets Leno was twice as popular with adults 18-49, scoring a 2.0 rating vs a 1.0 rating for Letterman.
In the metered market houshold ratings between 11:30p-12:30a Jay Lenos return to The Tonight Show dominated Leterman and Late Show. Leno had a 5.4/14 (household rating/share) to Lettermans 3.0/8.
Sure, Lenos first night back (and perhaps first week or two back) is likely inflated by a post-Olympic halo, but the early indication is all is forgiven.

Isn't he the one who, during the 2000 campaign, showed a photo of W during his show with the words "snipers wanted" underneath? If so,he could be the funniest guy to have ever drawn breath and I'd still have no use for him.
But that's just me.
I’m a guessing Letterman will need to insult Sarah to help his ratings. The hatefulness of the metro demographic is extremely predictable.
Yep, they are both liberals but at least Leno is a nicer liberal than the CBS not funny guy. I hope Leno beats him every night.
Jimmy Kimmel beats ‘em all. Try him you might like him.
I too prefer Conan to both. I'm not sure why, as I'm right between O'Brien and Letterman/Conan in age. I just find Conan more entertaining.
Having said that, Conan is going to be up against some challenges if he moves to FOX. First, he'll likely be on at 11:00, rather than 11:30. Second, FOX doesn't have the affiliate support that NBC/CBS have. It will be difficult for O'Brien to just get on as many stations as Letterman/Leno, especially in the first year or two. And lastly, FOX doesn't have a very good track record in this regard - see Magic, Chevy and Joan. Conan might eventually get there, if FOX gives him enough time to establish himself.
Yeah, Paar was the first of the late-night shows, IIRC. I was a kid then, but recall when he left, there was a lot of talk about Carson and whether he'd succeed. Uh, huh.
There was also Arthur Godfrey, but I never liked him as well as the others. And it was more of a variety show. His sitting around, playing his Ukulele never did much for me...
See This Thread
He also did one of Bush in crosshairs.
It stayed up on the screen during his show for a verrrrry long time.
He didn't get in trouble for it IIRC, but his show bombed eventually.
He was more of a narcissist than Conan
Ferguson was still the manager of an office on a television show starring Drew Carey back then.
No, that was Craig Kilborn.
Craig Ferguson is the Scotsman who played Nigel Wick on the Drew Carey show.
Ferguson had Sarah Palin on his show long before she was famous. He used to do a deal where he asked mayors of various American cities to grant him honorary citizenship of their cities. Sarah Palin sent him a video in which she granted him honorary citizenship of the entire state of Alaska. After her video, Ferguson may have been the first to refer to Palin as having a "naughty librarian" look. You can probably find the video on You Tube.
Ooops...my bad.I always get my Craigs confused.I've heard of Ferguson but have never seen his show.Being an old (gaseous emission) he's on well past my bedtime. ;-)
Love Ferguson. Like David Feherty, he is extremely happy to be living and working in the United States of America.
It wasn't Ferguson, it was either the original Host or the second one. I can't recall the names right now. Ferguson interviewed then Governor Palin and dubbed her a “Naughty Librarian”. Palin invited him up to Alaska after that.
Steve Allen? No thanks.
He was a secular humanist and wrote a book (``Steve Allen on the Bible, Religion, and Morality'') which is essentially an attack on the inerrancy of the Holy Scriptures.
He also featured the vulgar drug-addled Lenny Bruce on his program.
That's probably why Ferguson ran it.
Because Palin had just become "famous."
His sexual innuendos at the end were childish
The guy was funny, and had good, funny, characters (and no, I don’t mean Lenny Bruce) on his show. As a kid, I was far more into that type of humor than I was into the late-night talk show format.
I’d take the Steve Allen Show over Letterman or Leno any day.
Only two words are fitting for David Letterman. He stinks!!!
Letterman isn’t funny. Conan, well, he wasn’t funny either as Tonight Show host, either. Leno is funny—except in his latest curling ad. peeuuuw!
***CBS needs to retire old Dave and find someone who could compete better with Leno.***
How about going back to good old movies after hours again? I miss them from the 1950s and 1960s when the local TV stations ran late movies! And good (and bad) old Si-fi movies on Saturday night. ;-(
But Noooo! They later thought all people wanted talk shows after hours!
Ferguson, O’Brien, Leno, Letterman - don’t like any of ‘em. It always seems to be about them, rather than their guests.
Carson had the ability to make it seem that his show was about the guests, not about the host. Classy presentation.
