Independence Day: Crist Likely to Drop GOP Label (Announcement Thursday)

Gov. Crist to make announcement on political future Thursday

Gov. Charlie Crist's fall from Republican Party grace will finally hit rock bottom on Thursday when he is expected to announce that he will run for the U.S. Senate as an independent, according to several news sources citing anonymous sources.

Crist had ducked the question for the past few weeks, but previously was on the record as saying he would never leave his beloved GOP. And by never, he meant as long as he thought he could beat Miami Republican candidate Marco Rubio, which seems like a long shot now.

Cruist has until Friday to officially pledge his allegeance to a party or no party at all. He has come out and said he hasn't made any decisions yet, but two supporters said Crist has been making phone calls to campaign contributors telling them they will be supporting an independent run starting Thursday. Crist's flip flop could not only mean doom for his political career unless he wins, but it could also spell disaster for the Republican Party, which has been begging Crist to drop out of the race. Recent polls have shown that a sure win for Rubio would turn into a three-horse dead heat if Crist went independent. Democrat candidate U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek has been gaining steam and is making the race even closer.

A press conference is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Crist's hometown of St. Petersburg, where he is expected to announce his intentions. Rubio and Meek have also scheduled press conferences to likely rip Crist no matter what he does.

Not many. Crist can only win if Rubio implodes. Meek stands a better chance, but I’d actually expect Crist to essentially stop campaigning around September.

Unless...is Crist thinking that the Dems would abandon Meek and endorse him? Obama does not have a good track record defending strong independent black politicians.

If he goes for it, though, Crist could cost Rubio money. That’s why the GOP doesn’t want him to run.

He's not Lieberman, and the Democrat in this race (unlike the Republican in Connecticut) is actually running a real campaign against both of them.

Dems have a choice. No reason for them to vote Crist. Republicans voted for Lieberman.

True that Dems have a chance, but the loss of a few RINO and swishy Republicans will be countered by the newly-energized Independents (may I say “Reagan Democrats”?).

Rubio should win, but he is stepping in s—t by wading in to the Arizona immigration fight. Rush chewed him out today about that.

” I wonder if all those drag queen stories are true? “

Articles about Charlie and his behavior at the Green Iguana gay bar in Tampa cite specific names.
Unless Crispy starts cutting into Meek’s numbers , the media will remain silent.
The Republicans are afraid to use oppo research , so Crispy’s secret life may remain secret .

Crist will end up in 3rd and will be finished in politics. Liberals aren’t going to vote for him and conservatives/independents are behind Rubio. This clown has no base of support. He’s the equivalent of the roommate who doesn’t want to leave when you and your girlfriend are making out on the couch.

The SOB!

He’s worse than McCain!!!

Speaking of which.... I wonder if McCain would go independent if he lost the primary to Hayworth.

Hometown of St. Pete should tell you all you need to know. Most liberal paper in Fl. Susan Sarandon loves the St. Pete times, that should say it all.

He might as well come out of the closet now too.

I would bet that he is being blackmailed into doing this.

Not same with Crist.

Lieberman had a huge national fundraising program among the Jewish block because he was seen as the strongest supporter of Israel in the Senate.

Charlie has nothing of the kind.

Lieberman has long, strong DC contacts and knew how to work the system. He could bring home the bacon for Connecticut.

Crist has no DC connections. The question will be asked, "What can Crist possibly do for Florida in DC?"

Lieberman had enough friends in CN that the endorsements of Hillary, et al, were countered by Lieberman's friends quiet campaigning.

Other than perhaps someone in Admas-Morgan, Charlie has nothing there.

Many long time CN dems loved Lieberman, and of course the large in-state Jewish vote.

Crist has nada. He will be denounced in every R meeting.

Joe was running for CN.

Charlie is running for Charlie.

Charlie just killed Ed reform in FL.

THERE IS A REASON WHY HE IS BEHIND RUBIO 2-1. It's simple. People don't like Charlie Crist anymore. His campaign will such wind, (and probably a few other things) for campaign money. This is all about Charlie's ego.

Just wait until the details of the 2008 Crist for VP “campaign” emerge.

There was one and only one person behind it; Charlie Crist.

Now the DNC has two candidates to fund. Without them where will Crist get any money?

Charlie Crist has earned himself a one-finger salute. I’m proud to be one of the first Freepers to tout Marco Rubio against him.

Blackmail would make sense. It would explain why he wouldn’t wait until 2012 and why he’s willing to make this ridiculous run rather than just hanging it up.
