UPDATE 5/21/2010) The two people in the white van have been identified as Jerry Kane, 45, of Ohio and his 16-year-old son, Joseph.

Those who knew the Kanes' say they were not white supremacist and were headed to Florida.

(West Memphis, AR 5/20/2010) We're digging deeper into the suspects behind today's shootout in West Memphis that killed two police officers and wounded two more.

Initial police broadcasts identified the van the men were traveling in as belonging to a church in southern Ohio.

On Your Side Investigators learned it's a church with a controversial history including ties to white supremacy.

The white minivan now sits rammed and riddled with bullets.

The two men inside were shot and killed during a gun battle with police.

Initial law enforcement bulletins announced the van was registered to House of God's Prayer church in New Vienna Ohio.

Until his death in 2003, locals say the national director of the Aryan Nations, Harold Ray Redfearin, was affiliated with House of God's Prayer.

"What I know about it was an Aryan Nation church," explained local business owner Gary Evans. "It didn't seem to fit in to a small farming community like New Vienna."

So far, Arkansas State Police is heading up this investigation. It isn't publicly connecting any dots.

"We're not getting into any supposition at this time of what, who may have associated with or what," said Bill Sadler, spokesman for the State Police. "There are a lot of unanswered questions tonight."

That includes who were the men shot and killed by police?

Investigators have refused to name them, say where they're from or even give their race or nationality.

The big question tonight, was the pair connected to any other groups or larger plot?

"It's way too early to discuss that idea or that lead until we can find out, we've got to find out who these people are first," said Sadler.

In a statement, a spokeswoman with the FBI office in Little Rock told us the bureau is gathering evidence on the perpetrators adding "Certainly we'll follow any leads we have federal jurisdiction over that arise."

Somehow the media can’t find any “links or controversial” ties to the KKK for the Democrat Party though

I am deeply sorry for the Officer’s families. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

I am, however, surprised that this isn’t wall to wall National Headlines. On the surface it has all the Bloomberg requirements. Something really isn’t fitting together.

If they are Aryans, expect Holder, Napolitano, and others to declare this is “Christian extremism” the kind Napolitano warned us about last year as being the most concerning form of extremism in America.

They sound like Paulistinians, preaching that money is not real and such. From their website, they also sounded paranoid. If the police saw a gun, they were likely trying to defuse the situation by handcuffing them and removing the guns. It sounds as if they got dad out of the van, started wrestling with the officer, and the son opened fire. Once the shooting started, there was no good ending in store.

I don’t think they had any Ron PAul 2008 stickers on the bumber of their car and as far as I can tell the vehicle looks riddled with bullets. Maybe they knew these guys were riding around and figured they could pin it on them, thinking they are some kind of extremist group, maybe they actually did shoot the police, kind of hard to figure out. Apparently the car had no plates on it? That seems suspicious to me, but if the kid opened fire then sure anything would be possible, but I don’t understand why he would open fire unless already having been fired upon, I wonder if the car was used by the kid and his friends or something and maybe the old man didn’t know what was going on? Who knows, I’ll await more info, but it seems strange they haven’t used this story, but since the Hutaree story they have sort of backed down from that kind of publicity mostly cause it made them look kind of goofy especially after the Times Square incident....that was able to happen most likely cause they were so worked up about the Hutaree ding dongs, IMHO.

They pulled the plates off after shooting the first two officers. The police knew where to find them because the stopped to ask directions and the fellow they asked noticed one of them taking off the plate, heard the radio bulletin that police were looking for a white van with Ohio plates, and called in to tell them where they got directions to.

I mentioned Paul from the talks they gave around the country. (as opposed to Aryan). Their site gives the impression of paranoid people. If they thought the police were out to get them, a routine stop blew up big time.

According to police where he lived in OH, Kane was the confrontational sort and supposedly had 5 run-ins with the law...including felonious assault.

Additionally, I read that he was arrested in New Mexico for not having a valid drivers license. He failed to show up for court, because he doesn't believe in that kind of thing so NM issued an arrest warrant.

Given his temperment, previous record, and arrest warrant... it's not hard to imagine what might have taken place when he got pulled over by the W. Memphis cops.
