NY TIMES ^ | 5-25-10 | LAURIE TARKAN

On a July afternoon in 2006, Patrick Hale microwaved a bag of popcorn for his two young children and sat down with them to watch television. When he got up to change the channel, he heard a strange noise behind him, and turned to see his 23-month-old daughter, Allison, turning purple and unable to breathe.

I can think of a certain congress critter who I wish would choke on a weiner!

They’ll need a separate label for dysphagiacs.

For at least 25 years we’ve had to endure people very rapidly reading the fine print at the end of radio ads. Those warnings have probably been heard by every radio listener thousands of times by now.

If you had to wager, how many times would you guess that rapid-fire fine-print and disclaimer recitation has saved people from their own stupidity? What is the cost/benefit of these aural warnings?

...just heard on Limbaugh’s show that the Marine father was “certified in CPR” and proceeded to use “sharp blows to her back” to dislodge the popcorn.

First off, CPR is used on someone who is already unconscious. Second, anyone who’s ever heard of the Heimlich maneuver knows good and damn well that you don’t hit someone on the back to dislodge food.

Besides all of that, I’m tired of being told what to be cautious of. My anger peaked when they started printing cereal boxes in Spanish!

Ping to 13!

Why was the father getting up to change the channel, btw? No remote? Poor kid.

Of course, the title doesn’t even fit the actual situation. The baby inhaled popcorn remnants.

I’m 45 now and I can’t read that shit in the warnings anymore.

For the father of the child that died, I wonder if he read the popcorn bag for warnings before he gave it to her. If now, a warning wouldn’t have helped.

That reminds of a "In a perfect world . . ." joke I heard. You know, like "In a perfect world chlorofluorocarbons would escape through the hole in the ozone layer." and "In a perfect world Yoko would have stepped in front of John." But the joke I heard about choking on a ham sandwich isn't funny, it's sick.

Being careful with what foods you gave your toddler used to be called “good parenting”. Why was he feeding her popcorn?

We need “Smart” masks that count how many times we chew and won’t allow us to swallow until we’ve chewed 25 time.

Hmmm. Forget you read that. I’m going to get a patent on it.

In California, virtually every building (store, office, shop, factory, whatever) has a Prop 65 label that says you will get cancer and die if you enter. Government stupidity knows no bounds.
