Kevin Costner, BP announce plans to use Costner's centrifuges

Actor Kevin Costner today joins with BP officials to tout plans to finally start using a machine Costner has backed that can rapidly remove 99 percent of oil from water.

Costner said it wasn't until this week that BP decided to put his machines into action. Costner still isn't happy it took this long -- since he helped develop the machine a decade ago -- and arrived to help with the Deepwater Horizon disaster less than two weeks after the explosion.

"Twenty-first century technology has sat idly on the shelf for ten years when it could have been deployed as a first, most efficient responder to mitigate the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe," the actor told a U.S. Senate committee, blaming bureaucratic obstacles and general intransigence kept his company sidelined for weeks.

Costner said took weeks to get Coast Guard approval for a test run. After tweaking the machines a bit, Costner says BP official Doug Suttles called this week with good news:

"He told me that it was working against the dispersants, that it was handling the variations of oil mixtures and thickness present in the gulf," said Costner. He ordered 32 machines and told me that this represented the beginning of us working together."

I’ve been out of the loop recently- can’t believe we have freepers who wouldn’t support Costner or anyone’s ideas to mitigate this nightmare. I remember weeks ago he was begging for at least a chance to try his technology. It seemed odd that no one took him up on it. But...then we are all wondering what’s really going on here anyway.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard is still stopping oil eating barges to check for life vests and fire extinguishers.

That reminds me of when California was burning, and (Then) gov. Davis was not allowing privately owned firefighting planes to help with putting out the fires because their planes didn't pass the California safety inspections..

I understand that. The only reason I can think that the Dutch assistance would be ignored is that Obama doesn’t want assistance, the excuse being that the Dutch ships do not meet EPA/OSHA/whatever standards. (And that’s the case: The Dutch ships would remove something like 90% or 99% of the oil from the water before putting it back into the sea. Not good enough for D. C., although it would certainly make a difference in the lives of people, animals, and plants affected.)

I did not know that. Thank you for the info.

you remark: “Sooooo, the refuse the help the Dutch offered and grab onto Costner?”

Again I urge: FREEPERS, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. You shouldn't need to be spoonfed.

Obumbles is finally going to accept the help the Dutch offered 3 days in - and that Palin said, weeks ago, they should.

In addition, waiving the Jones Act and permitting foreign assistance, will PO the unions. This administration has proven to bend over backwards for unions, that cannot be discounted as a motivation.

Costner has more sense than the whole Zero Regime put together...

Got that right.

But then, HE loves this country.

Maybe you should contact the EPA who has stopped anyone from using biodegradable solvent to get rid of the oil since day one and ask them what they were thinking. I’m sure Carol Browner (environmental nutcase running the EPA) is smarter than the scientists who created it. /s

It’s gotten to the point that some FReepers come here to bash— talk is cheap, and thoughtless, critical commentary is really cheap. It’s all they do. Costner and Cameron are easy targets because of their political and Hollywood connections. We spend whole threads bashing Michelle Obama’s appearance— because it’s fun to abuse, and real issues (her actions, speech and beliefs) are less important. We did it to Chelsea Clinton, so why not do it to Michelle Obama? Civility is out the window.

Asbestos suit on.

No, he is not an engineer. In fact, if he is in Louisiana claiming to be an engineer, then it seems he is in violation of the law.

IANAL, but see Louisiana Revised Statutes, Title 37, Chapter 8, which defines engineer as "an individual who, by reason of his special knowledge and ability to apply the mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences and the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, acquired by an engineering education and engineering experience, is qualified to practice engineering, as evidenced by his licensure as such by the board."

And, using Google, I have found no credible reference to him meeting this definition.

Lighten up Francis

It's way past time to "lighten up."

Go down to the Gulf and tell that to the people who's lives have been ruined...by the criminal negligence of this administration -

As to FR - It didn't used to have so many freepers that were little more than nattering nabobs. It used to be predominantly people who were informed and posted responsibly, who honored the opportunity Jim gave us all to do so.

Our country is being sabotaged and people just want to sit and opine off the top of their heads.

Smoke it.

I'm sure the Dutch don't follow our regulations, which is very important to the Obummer administration. After all, Obummer called off Jindal's barges. Obummer will never live this down. Never.

You are totally right. This will be his "legacy".

Unfortunately, tens of thousands of people will suffer more from it, for decades, than he will.

Time - long PAST time - to waive the rules and regs and kiss off the unions - and get the job done. Those rules and regs are for worrying about long BEFORE a catastrophe, not during.
