Thanks to a slew of gaffes, blunders, miscalculations and alarming personality revelations, Obama has become a surprising liability where our reputation abroad is concerned - surprising not only because he was elected, in part, to restore our supposedly damaged image overseas, but also because he was touted as a smooth and charming diplomat.
But whatever generosities we afforded the inexperienced junior senator from Illinois, smooth and charming he is not, it turns out. And these rookie mistakes are getting downright embarrassing.
The latest came last week, when the President sent the G-20 a pointed but pleading letter imploring Europe to quit it already with all the sensible spending cuts. He apparently believes if we are going to spend our way into oblivion, then Europe should have the good manners to join us. Misery loves company, after all, and so does bankruptcy.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico hasn't put the White House in a good light, either. For an administration that famously refuses to let a good crisis go to waste, its total failure to capitalize on an opportunity to show real leadership is perplexing, to say the least. Promising to kick someone's ass in between a rock concert and a round of golf is not, it turns out, a very impressive show of political agility.
In Britain, where our once-special relationship is growing increasingly ordinary, Tory Lord Tebbit called Obama's ineffective response to the BP oil spill "crude, bigoted, xenophobic display of partisan political presidential petulance." The staggering alliteration aside, those are some harsh words. And Maureen Dowd, The New York Times' usually fawning Obamafan, called him "bloodless" and "self-destructive." Yikes.
But these are just the latest in a string of global embarrassments, the kinds that were supposed to be a relic of the previous administration.

Wait till Americans find out the real background of this piece of shoe scraping!
I am not laughing
The red in the face is not embarrassment, it’s pure anger.
Sadly, we still have 2+ years of his Marxist policies. Even if we do retake both Houses this fall, he will still be President and still be legislating by Executive Order. I know we could refuse to fund his Orders but his Czars are quietly, behind the scenes, dismantling all the good standards we have developed over the years. It is going to take decades to undo all their destruction. Pray for our country.
Good thing he’s not the legitimate President.
Great line!
“And you thought Bush was embarrassing?”
Uhh... no, actually I didn’t!
To nearly half the voting public, it doesn’t matter. The dims would support this moron no matter how badly he does. He has a ‘D’ after his name, and that’s all they need to know.
Yes, I was watching some of the Congressional “hearings” (aka Political Kabuki Theatre) and there was so much about it that was an absolutely sickening spectacle or stereotypical “Ugly Americanism.”
Waxman et al., real stand-up guys for the Obambi administration, being ridiculous in their demanor toward the CEO of a huge global corporation, but more importantly one very important to our closest ally, did nothing but feed into the height of images of (stereotypical) American arrogance, snobbishness, uncouthness and rudeness.
Sure BP has made significant mistakes here, maybe even been criminally negligent. But for all the world to see how these little men in Congress get so self-righteously full of their ignorant selves must have set back the image of America abroad by decades.
Thanks, Obambi.
Prior to 11/04/08, IIRC, Europe was all giddy over zero and acted like the rest of stupid America. The only difference, though, was that AFTER the election, they quickly learned what a flim-flammer he is.
To his credit, zero has completely proven what a low class idiot he is by seriously damaging the relationship with our longtime European allies in order to court those who hate America and want to see it destroyed.
(muttering to self) There’s never a good impeachment around when you need one!
Had I voted for this guy, I would be ashamed to show my face in public. It looks like our next President will be, ready for this? HILLARY. IMHO, the fix is in for 2012, beware. Obozo knows he took on more than he can chew, I expect that he will bow out of the 2012 election. He accomplished his goal, he became the first black president and made his place in US history. I would have preferred Keyes in the president slot over Obama any day, but Keyes is far too intelligent to appeal to the average Maury watching voter. The average voter these days seem to be tabloid educated.
Whenever I hear that Bush was an embarrassment, what comes to mind is the scene when his SS Agent was surrounded by Chilean Security officials and Bush reached in and yanked the guy out. THAT’S a President. I hated some of the things that Bush did but at least he was a man.
Oh, and by the way, I didn’t think Bush was embarrassing.
I do think Obambi is not only embarrassing to the nth degree, but a dangerous bumbler. We must work very hard to take the House and Senate away from him in 2010. This is a most important first step to reining him in while we wait to kick him out.
I agree with you. I disagreed with some of President Bush’s policies, but I was never embarassed by him.
‘Promising to kick someone’s ass in between a rock concert and a round of golf is not, it turns out, a very impressive show of political agility.’
Apparently he is out on the golf course looking for the ‘real spiller’.
Word.
I did not agree with everything Bush did, but time after time I found myself saying, “In a crisis, he’s the man.”
