If not for an elusive, antelope-like creature in the Arizona desert, the Department of Homeland Security might have a much easier time cracking down on illegal immigration in hotbeds along the border.
The Sonoran Pronghorn, which roams in Arizona, is an endangered species on the verge of extinction. As a result, environmentalists and governmental stewards have been repeatedly blocking Customs and Border Protection from expanding border technology in their habitat -- despite complaints that illegal immigrants are taking advantage of the security gap and doing plenty of harm to the environment in the process.
Concerns about a host of species for decades have prompted standoffs between border and environmental officials. Border officers have limited access to federal lands in some of the most heavily trafficked areas because of the harm the patrols could do to the environment. But pronghorn preservation is popping up more and more as a barrier to Border Patrol and catching the attention of some on Capitol Hill.

Chubacabras will be next...
People would never
Exploit the ESA rules...
Oh, perish the thought!
What about all the garbage and human waste left by those trying to enter into our country illegally...doesn’t that impact the habitat of these animals adversely? The encroachment of man into these habitats has long been the rallying cry of these people trying to protect endangered species..what about the people from across the border??
Sorry citizens!
We would do our jobs, but for
(FILL IN THE BLANK HERE)
The Constitutions says nothing about protecting endangered species, but it does say we have legitimate borders and a need to protect our people from invasion.
The illegals will kill those beasts for a night’s campfire if the spot one. A lookout tower won’t hurt a thing in comparison.
Liberals are freaking idiots, all the time.
Oh how freeking predictable. And once this one is resolved they’ll have a group come out and claim that huge stretches of the border are sacred Indian lands that we can’t disturb. Mark my words.
And you can’t build a fence, because the pronghorns have to commute to Mexico, dontcha know...
I think the state of Arizona should sue Wilderness Watch for aiding and abetting illegal immigration.
The environmental damage done by Illegals is immeasurable. I have tried to post pictures of one of the pathways used by illegals on this post but am photographically challenged and can’t figure out how but if anyone would like photos from the Southern part of my beautiful State of Arizona of discarded backbacks, plastic water bottles, diapers, jackets, empty food cans, just let me know and I will email them to you.
Better keep the illegals out of Arizona. They'll eat the damn things.
Only by dividing them up into five different “sub species” can you claim that the “Sonoran Pronghorn” is endangered.
The major danger they face is ‘blue tongue’ disease from sheep. So as long as the Border Patrol doesn't take any sheep with them; I don't really see the impact upon the ‘Sonora’ Pronghorn population.
But this is politics, not actual conservation. Conservationists have whored themselves out for liberal political causes far too much to be taken seriously; and that is bad; because I am all for conservation of wild spaces wild species and our abundant natural resources.
Incorrect. The fence is exempt from ESA. That was part of the Real ID Act passed in 2005.
Arizona border
Some of the destruction of habitat in the N.W. on public lands and parks.
Note the candles. Last summer Mexican Drug Cartels burned down 88,000 acres in the La Brea fire alone in California.
We should be suing the government under the Endangered species act to enforce immigration laws to protect these 'habitats'.
There’s also the even rarer jackelope that must absolutely be protected.
I did not know that.
Of course, that exemption is one Libby judge away from extinction, itself...
The whole “endangered feces” thing is commonly abused by the environazis to prevent anything they don’t like.
Like killing off California farming so some itty-bitty fish commonly found elsewhere could be saved. The wackos maintained that because this fish was slightly different than all the others of it common species, it was “endangered”.
BS.
Last night a local station had a spot about the Mexican Cartels drug grows in So. Oregon/ No. California. This particular one cost the county $40,000 to get to and clean up.
They showed the butchered trees, holes in the ground, miles of irrigation with every manner of pesticide being used.
But NONE of that is a concern to the envirofreaks. Mexico has spread it’s organized crime all over this nation, not just Arizona. We can’t go into the woods next to our homes!

Seven different Sheriffs from Southern Oregon are working together trying to uncover illegal marijuana grows. Deep in the Applegate, Sheriff’s Deputies show us what’s left of a grow.
“We can’t cover all of this, we do everything we can to try and locate these grows, at the earliest possible so we can deal with them so the public doesn’t have to,” said, Rod Countryman Undersheriff with the Jackson County Sheriffs Office
The site supplies across the nation and internationally. Officials say the two men arrested both had connections to mexican drug cartels. They also see a connection to harder drugs like cocaine, heroin, and meth.
