A problem that is centered in Austin, spun from Austin and largely wouldn’t exist without Austin. This has a simple solution and I think Texans recognize it.

It doesn’t matter how conservative you are in terms taxes and business, if you can’t get control of the socialist spending. Big government equals big debt.

The income may be down in Texas, but California has obstacles which make their circumstances less palatable.
Union state employees are far greater in number in California. Also, the Texas Constitution requires a balanced budget which will make it less difficult for the Texas courts to force the state to continue spending money which they do not have.

This is a silly article and an even sillier, dishonest exerpt.

The author’s caveats, which are left out of the posted exerpt, destroy the intended point of the article.

There is likely no budget deficit at all in Texas; and if there is, the legislature should have no serious problem in eliminating it.

The Obama administration wants Perry out and is willing to do what they can to get rid of him.

They are sending the EPA to close down refineries in Texas...that will help slow down the economy of the state.

And Perry is turning down federal money because of all the attached strings...

I love the fact that he keeps turning down federal money, and in the long run, the state's economy will be better for it.

The Dems want Perry to look bad so they can get their boy White in there.

I'm voting for Perry until someone better come along.

If I remember correctly approximately 75% of the Texas budget goes to two items: Health/Human Services and Education. With an estimated $18 billion deficit and being a few months out until the Legislature convenes to adopt a budget we may well see the shortfall rise.

Look for increases in fees/taxes/services/etc. Maybe Obama can find another few billion to help this time around like he did in 09 with $12 billion.

If illegal immigration costs AZ roughly $1.3 billion a year, what is it costing TX?

ca doesn't have a budget. Any reference to a budget is follie. ca politicians are too busy spending money they don't have and funding unions and special interests to waste time on a budget that could constrain them. kind of like the fed gov’t that has adopted the same strategy

Texas is nothing like California. This is just fodder for White and the income tax crowd.

Promoting an income tax in Texas should be grounds for deportation.

This article is such a load of horsesh*t and so is the FW Star Telegram article. You can read about how Texas addresses its budget here:

http://sunshinereview.org/index.php/Texas_state_budget

Our Texas Constitution requires a balanced budget. It’s not a recommendation. It’s a requirement. We have a $9B rainy day fund that can be used with the approval of the legislature. Any “projected” spending over “projected” revenue requires the approval of 4/5 of our legislature. It ain’t gonna happen. We’ll cut, cut, cut until the “projected” budget is balanced.

We are nowhere near having the financial problems that California has. Nowhere. Not. Even. Close.

As Rush has stated, there are no longer newspapers that report the news. There are only propaganda distributors pretending to be newspapers.

Cut spending - what most Americans do when income shrinks, why not government? You could fire 25% of the state Democratic apparatchiks in Austin and never miss a single one of them.

Lower taxes - attract and encourage business expansion and relocation, get more people employed = more revenue

Control borders - why are we paying tax $$$$ for free handouts and to incarcerate millions of illegals? If they are unwilling to obey the laws of entry, what makes anyone think they will respect any laws? Ship them home!

Drill baby drill! - Screw Obama’s tyrannical moratorium and let the environazis scream like the pansies they are. Create jobs, taxes and wealth with the resources God gave us. To borrow and adapt a phrase used during the Texas revolution, Come and stop us!

Do those four things and that shortfall vanishes quickly and unemployment ceases to be an issue. There is a much better chance of that happening here than in California and Washington. Its really not that difficult.

BTW - If Texas is as bad as California, why do I see so many Californians and blue state yankees moving to Texas right now?
