PANAMA CITY, Florida (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Saturday backed off remarks that appeared to endorse a proposed Muslim cultural center near the site of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York City, saying he only supported the organizers' right to build it.
At a White House event on Friday, Obama seemed to offer his support for the construction of Cordoba House near the site known as "Ground Zero" in lower Manhattan. U.S. conservatives and many New Yorkers object to the project.
The 13-story building will include meeting rooms, a prayer space, an auditorium and a swimming pool.
His Friday comments drew criticism from conservatives and others, and the president sought to clarify them during a trip to Florida on Saturday.
"I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there," Obama told reporters while visiting the Gulf Coast.
"I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding. That's what our country is about."

He probably voted ‘Present’ at least once or twice that day.
This is why he plays with the emotions of those who were there and those who never came back from work that day.

A simple quote from Friday's event would clarify what they're talking about. Can't have that, though. Doing so might make Dear Leader look bad. Much better to obfuscate the issue by leaving the quote out.

Rubbish. He endorsed the mosque in front of a room full of muslims. It was calculated, and it’s an insult to the people who perished in New York on 9/11.
His statement Friday night seemed unequivocal to me.
Too late. He needs to be held to his endorsement and we need to be asking every Democrat office-seeker if they agree with their president that the mosque at Ground Zero should be built.
Obama stepped in this big time and the GOP *must* pound on it and force all Democrats to agree with him or disagree. This is a wedge issue that can be used to pull a lot of votes away from the Dems.
He luvs to use that “Let me be clear” phrase. And then if you hold him to it, you’re a racist.
