WASHINGTON -- A White House spokesman said today that politics wasn’t a factor in President Obama’s remarks about building a mosque near the World Trade Center site.
Deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton said it was “not politics” but Obama’s feeling that he had the obligation as president to “make sure people are treated equally” under the Constitution.
Obama has said that religious freedom allows the mosque to be built, but without commenting on the wisdom of building one two blocks from ground zero.
Republicans have pounded him for his comments, making it a prime midterm election issue.
Burton said Obama “felt it was his obligation as president to address this.” Obama was on the way to Wisconsin for fundraising.
Obama endorsed the plan on Friday night, but pulled back on his support over the weekend.
This comes as the leader of the Hamas terror group on Sunday jumped into the emotional debate on the plan to construct a mosque near Ground Zero -- insisting Muslims "have to build" it there.
"We have to build everywhere," said Mahmoud al-Zahar, a co-founder of Hamas and the organization's chief on the Gaza Strip

I’m going to repeat myself: if politics is not the issue then Obama needs to come out in favor of permitting St. Nicholas Orthodox Church to be rebuilt. It was crushed when one of the Towers fell on it on 9/11. All I hear from Dear Reader is crickets on the issue, so I call lying about politics not being part and parcel of the response.
Then again, his lips WERE moving, after all.

The words Obama said on Friday in support of this abomination he agreed to and proclaimed before all of those assembled and before the entire world OF HIS OWN FREE WILL. (For him to now be saying that he did not mean what he said is ridiculous.)
Obama is nothing but a liar following Satan, the Father of lies! He is not to be trusted, he is to be opposed and no matter what the "White House" says, we must all remember that according to taqqiya it is completely "kosher" in Islam for Muslims to LIE in order to deceive those who do not follow Islam = i.e., the "infidels", in order to gain your ultimate ends of conquest and total subjugation. That is exactly what Obama the closet Marxist Muslim is doing = lying in order to deceive America and Americans.
The problem is this; with his statement on Friday Obama COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY BROKE FAITH WITH THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA! He once and for all told America and the World exactly which side he is on: He supports Islam and the enemies of the United States both at home and abroad. We have him speaking these words, on video. He can lie and obfuscate and try to "backpedal" all he wants, but it is too late, he cannot undo what he has done;
Obama didn't just "spit it the eye of America;" he pulled down his pants in front of the entire country and world, squatted on the hallowed 9/11/01 Ground Zero site and took a huge PUBLIC DUMP UPON GROUND ZERO AND UPON ALL OF AMERICA! After he was done, he got up, pulled up his pants, smiled, his narcissistic smile at the camera and said: "This is where I stand regarding America, Islam and Ground Zero."
Just where in the heck were these folks when they elected him. Were their heads inserted in a certain part of their body, back side???
The longer it goes on, the more I enjoy it. And notice how few fellow Democrats are eager to jump to King Hussein's defense. Members of the MSM have rushed to Barky’s side, of course, like all good lickspittles, but congress critters? Ah, the sound of silence; or rather, the faint rustle that represents the gnashing of teeth.
You see, the more the White House tries to spin it, the more they lose. They can't see that the spin makes it worse. On Friday, King Hussein endorsed the ground zero mosque without a doubt. Anyone who reads the remarks can easily draw that conclusion.
But the spin is even better: King Hussein was only endorsing freedom of religion - but he wasn't commenting on whether the mosque is a good idea or not.
Well, King Hussein, why not comment on whether it's a good idea or not? I mean, you've certainly caused a dust-up. Why not settle the matter of your position once and for all? Wouldn't it be easy to say that while you respect Muslim's religious freedoms, that considering the nature of 9/11 and Islam's history, a mosque at ground zero is not appropriate? But of course, he won't say this.
And so the spin continues, and the longer it continues the more people will draw the obvious conclusion: King Hussein personally believes in it, but knows that to say so is political suicide.
And they can then draw one more conclusion: This man is hiding something about his true beliefs because it is politically dangerous for him to acknowledge them. And those beliefs are so counter to the interests and beliefs of the citizens of this country that they make him unfit to serve as president
He’s going on a 10 day vacation.
