Obama vs. America
The Corner National Review ^ | August 16, 2010 | Peter Kirsanow

Posted on 08/16/2010 2:24:40 PM PDT by La Lydia

President Obama’s statements regarding the proposed Ground Zero mosque are the latest in a series of indicators that we are at a very peculiar pass: We have a president who doesn’t get America. For the first time in history we have a president whose default setting is in opposition to the general sensibilities of the American people. His behavior too frequently suggests that he’s playing a cosmic joke on Americans’ essential decency, considered patriotism, and belief in American exceptionalism.

You don’t need to have been a lecturer in constitutional law like Obama to know that the mosque’s backers have a right to build at Ground Zero. Polls show that Americans overwhelmingly acknowledge that right. But unlike the president, when his fellow Americans think of the construction of a mosque on Ground Zero, their view doesn’t begin and end with the First Amendment and local zoning ordinances. Rather, their view is of images that the mainstream media has done their best to airbrush out of our collective consciousness: Americans leaping out of windows and plunging — seemingly interminably — to their deaths to avoid incineration; first responders pulling charred remains from the smoking rubble of the collapsed towers; New Yorkers searching frantically for evidence that loved ones escaped the horror. That Obama, as the leader of the nation, fails to recognize that the situation calls for more than a sophomoric analysis that could be rendered by any first-year law student is disquieting.

As Dorothy Rabinowitz has noted, Obama’s alienation from the citizenry is just beginning to be more broadly revealed, but has been on display since the 2008 campaign. The media either failed to report it or chastised anyone who dared notice. When some remarked about Obama’s refusal to do something as simple as wear a flag lapel pin, they were pronounced unsophisticated and jingoistic. Obama’s casual stance during the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner” was declared a triviality. When Reverend Wright was caught shouting ” G–damn America!” those who wondered whether Obama’s 20 years in Wright’s pews might suggest ideological concurrence were dismissed as alarmist. When some expressed concern that Obama might agree with his wife that America is a “downright mean country” and that perhaps he, too, for the first time in his adult life, was proud of his country, they were told to grow up.

Then Obama’s association with Bill Ayers emerged and the mainstream media closed ranks and refused, as long as they could, to even report it. And when Obama expressed unalloyed contempt for Midwesterners who “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment,” a phalanx formed to assure the public of his pure intentions.

There were other instances throughout the campaign and first months in office suggesting that for Obama, multiculturalism trumps national unity and moral relativism supersedes cultural confidence. His serial apologies for America, embrace of America-hating Hugo Chávez, and supplication to foreign thugs are consistent with a “blame America first” mentality that may be unremarkable for a political science professor but is toxic for the leader of the greatest nation in history.

But perhaps most emblematic of Obama’s self-identification was his proud declaration, before a vast crowd in Berlin, that he is a “citizen of the world.” Most Americans believe that that world would be a much darker place without the United States of America. And they would be pleased if their president could express that belief without being patronizing, self-referential, or defensive.

But to do so, it’s helpful to get America and Americans.

He's a pure politician and the exact sort of actor which he stated he wasn't. Opportunism, flip flopping, double talk, promise everything, political sacrifices of people, completely partisan.......

He's a master at telling everyone feel good sweet nothings, even if it contradicts itself from group to group or location to location. Remember his talk of people clinging to God and their guns? Remember in 2008 when he tried to portray himself as moderate on abortion? He's a good talker and is keenly aware of what the people he's talking too want to hear. His speech writers draft his stuff tailored to the audience, to include the jokes.

This is simply a case where his “tell all what they want to hear” strategy backfired.

I don’t even think he’s a politician. Not sure what label to put on him (that I can type in this white box). He’s something we have never, ever seen the likes of before. And hopefully, won’t again.

It’s certainly not an original thought but early on, conservatives realized that Barack Hussein Obama was not only a radical leftist but, birth certificate issues aside, definitely was not an American in the sense that he felt the slightest affiliation for the country, it’s unique history and, of course, it’s values. Now, the rest of the country is waking up to the fact that Obama is a left-wing radical, arrogant beyond belief and clearly disdainful of America and it’s people. Obama may not ‘get’ America but America ‘gets’ Obama - and we don’t like him one bit. Wannabe leftist dictators don’t fit well in the land of the free.

“the mainstream media closed ranks and refused, as long as they could, to even report it.”

The liberal-Marxist press has been engaged in treason for decades. It has shut its ears and closed its eyes to the continuing thievery and sedition commited by the criminal fascist syndicate occupying Washington. The 1st amendment does not give you the freedom to knowingly cover up and secretly advocate the destruction of our liberties.

If the federal courts can find justification for asset forfeiture in 16th century common law piracy statutes, we can surely find justification for branding, banishing, imprisoning or hanging media traitors in that same ancient common law. This problem of the traitorous media must be addressed and acted on.

Two peoples, one wanting individual liberties and the other promoting slavery, cannot and will not live together. History shows that.

Yes, you are right. The media is, for the most part, a cabal of lying scumbags and mental deficients. But the thing is, he told everyone what he was going to do, it was reported, and he didn’t hide what he is, and people voted for him anyway. Now, they are like “We were misled. He’s letting us down. We’ve been betrayed” Whining, etc. when, in fact, nothing he has said or done should have come as a surprise to anyone.

The problem isn’t 0b0z0 the puppet, it’s Soros and his communist unions and Media troops.

Soros is the snake’s head.

Any remedy you may think of has to include getting rid of our unelected ruler, Soros, by freezing his “small” assets in the US (most of his assets must be abroad), defunding his union asses and confronting his Media hirelings/followers through lawsuits and investigations.

Soros will run away to where he couldn’t be extradited as soon as things point in his direction. Cowardly dictators always have a huge plan “B” and that is a refuge with plenty of assets in their pockets.

I blame Obama on the large number of ignorant and functionally illiterate Americans allowed to vote.

We need to require all voters to pass a simple 12th Grade final examination in civics and American history with at least a 75% score.

This would also sink the Democrat Party forever, since such a low bar requirement would likely take the franchise from 90% of their voters.

I agree with you, more or less. He's the Oprah Winfrey/Deepak Chopra President though I don't think he's a master at all. Its that his shallowness and stupidity has been coverered up or omitted by a complicent media.

The number one thing that people base what they vote on: Name recognition.

The number two factor driving peoples decision who to vote for: Appearance.

Does that give you a warm and fuzzy feeling?

Obama proved that you can reinvent yourself (voting record on issues vs. what he said he represented on the campaign trail), that you can contradict yourself on the campaign trail, that you need no answers or solutions (your energy policy can be as shallow as “inflating your tires”), that you can make ridiculous statements, make many technical/factual errors, you don't even need any significant education and experience in: law enforcement, defense, intelligence, as a businessman, executive, or in foreign affairs. Not even your drug use and associations matter!

What matters? The new list of qualifications for the office of the Presidency:

Do you have a cool name?
Do you wear pretty suits?
Are you thin?
Are you tall?
Are you historical? Not sure what that means exactly.
Do you smile a lot? It's best if you have big white teeth - people like that.
Can you walk with a swagger?
Do you look cool when asked questions?
Do you have a pretty wife?
Are you willing to pimp yourself out on late night comedy shows, talk shows, concerts, whatever?
Are you willing to have pictures of you in your bathing suit circulated and leaked out (the special intended leak that is)
Will you have a blog and have a girl make videos shaking her rear on Youtube?
Can you “dance” on the Ellen DeGeneres show? If not, that's OK, but can you at least play the Sax on the Arsineo Hall show?

The only true skill you need that requires some talent- "Can you give a nice speech?" Or as Joe Biden put it, he's clean and “articulate.” That articulate thing does require some skill, admit it! lol

Defund their organizations, fire them (tenure or not), fire appointed judges and replace with elected ones on the condition of a 6-week recall for all elected positions. Those include federal, state and local positions.

Now you’re talking! (revolution, of course!)

In short we need to arrest or exile the current ruling class.

Half measures won’t do it.

How would you exile them without arresting them.

Whether people like him or not, Peter Fitzgerald kept his promise to be a one term Senator. We have too many life time politicians

“We have too many life time politicians “

I agree that that is a big part of the problem. When I hear a politician say “public service” I gag. The Clintons are shining examples of “public servants” who were able to throw a $2 mil.+ wedding for their daughter, courtesy of their years of “public service.” I want public service to be like military service. The person gives up their normal life for 2, 4 or 6 years, whatever the term of office is for their position, and does the peoples business. They put their lives on hold and make a sacrifice, like those in the military who serve. These entrenched lifetime politicians growing rich off their “public service” have to go.
