Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has clarified his recent remarks on immigration policy, saying he does not hire illegal immigrants to do repairs on his home. The onetime secretary of state for George W. Bush waded into one of the most contentious culture-war issues of 2010 during an appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" -- the latest in a series of dissensions from conservative orthodoxy that have prompted some of his former GOP colleagues to question his party allegiance.
"I don't hire illegal immigrants," Powell said in a statement Monday.

He pays an American and they hire them.
How does he know that they are illegal? Sounds like racial profiling to me.
Wasn’t Colin in the chain of command of Lt. Kelly of the Mei Lai fame? Although Colin got a pass - probably due to Afirmative Action - the principal reason for his career path in the Army!
This sound absolutely like profiling, like discrimination. He sees a bunch of people apparently of Latin American descent, so he assumes that some are illegal?! If a white Republican did something like that, he’d be drummed out of public life.
This shows how much bigotry there is in today’s society. Colin Powell, as a African-American left-wing male, never thought twice about his words. Because of that identity, he will be able to get away with saying almost anything on this subject. In the worst case, he’d just apologize or change his remarks.
But if a white conservative politician said that, like a macaca moment, every single media reporter would be talking about it night and day. It probably would end only when he resigned from his job and any other public offices.
Powell hires them, but don’t expect any of those aliens to be living within miles of Powell’s McLean VA mansion. And did Powell ever think that these illegals are in the construction, decorating, repair and service jobs that used to be held by working class blacks.
How come the NAACP isn’t calling Powell an Uncle Tom for hanging around with the rich McLean whites and ignoring the out of work blacks?

you are correct - if they are “immigrants” they have a green card. Maybe FR might begin a campaign to stop the kidnapping of the word by the illegals.

Great point! If he hired them, he’d probably know their legal status. Since he now says “you’ve probably seen them around your house” he’s assuming all Latino people are illegals. I’m married to a Mexican woman that entered the US legally, so I take offense at his racism!
He didn’t hire them, but the guy he did hire to do the work hired them. It all depends on what the definition of “hire” is, now doen’t it.
Of course not, Powell’s contractor hires illegals to fix Powell’s house, work in his yard etc.
