In a different day and age, Jeff Hart would be the most famous American in our country right now. He would be honored at the White House. Schoolchildren would learn of his skill and heroism. But because Jeff Hart works in an industry under fire by the Obama administration, more people in Chile will celebrate this symbol of American greatness than in American itself.
Jeff Hart is a driller based in my home state of Colorado. The father of two has been drilling water wells in Afghanistan at U.S. Army bases. When the San Jose Mine in Chile collapsed in August, he flew to lend his renowned expertise to the rescue effort. As part of an amazing three-way race to the trapped miners, Hart drilled for 33 days straight and was first to reach the caved-in workers. The AP recounts the story — and what strikes me again and again is how the world turned to American ingenuity and American fortitude and American equipment and American enterprise to get the job done:

But the Peruvian and Chilean media are full of stories praising him. Hmmm.

Funny you mention this...Sunday on Fox they went to an interview with a driller down in Chile, and he was...AMERICAN! Hmmm, I says to meself, I didn’t know that Yanks were down there drilling. I had thought it was all Chileans...well, waddya know.

Been watching the “Victory at Sea” WWII documentary with my children. They are utterly astounded at the miles and miles of pipeline, the thousands upon thousands of airplanes and tanks, the vast numbers of cruisers, destroyers, battleships, carriers, and submarines, the millions of tons of food and ordnance, the millions of gallons of fuel, and the millions of men, all offered by the United States to the world ALMOST OVERNIGHT.

Remember when the media was interested in the truth more than the story line? I do. But then I am over 60. And that was well before CNN began.
Just as bad: the Voice of America stories do not mention the American, either. But they do mention that the insufferable Evo Morales is traveling to Chile to see the rescue. I wrote them an unpleasant note.
The Chileans are smart enough to not try to re-invent the wheel and greatly respect American ingeninuity and expertise. Chile is by no means a 3rd World country.

It was a documentary that was shown on TV back in the 1950s. I remember watching it with my dad.
I found the 3-disk DVD set in a Wal-Mart $5 bin. What a GREAT find! Music composed and directed by Richard Rogers, of Rogers and Hammerstein. Narrated by Leonard Graves.

Ironically, Voice of America has been overrun with anti-American blighters. There’s more pro-American sentiment in Russia than there is in Voice of America.
Oh I know that...I’ve worked with a few Chileans in my day, and they both were amazing. I spoke to them and learned a bit about the country.
Its hard to tell you are not in a modern US city when in Santiago.
