Cheerleader, 11, out for refusing to 'shake booty'
MSNBC ^ | 10/20/2010 | John Springer

An 11-year-old girl who was thrown off a Nebraska elementary school’s junior cheerleading squad because she refused to “shake her booty” says that while the gyrations may be a crowd-pleaser, she doesn’t think young girls should be moving their bodies like that.

“It just felt wrong. I don’t know why,” Faylene Frampton said Wednesday during an interview on TODAY with Tamron Hall. “It j ust didn’t feel it was a cheer that was appropriate for kids of my age or younger.”

The sixth-grader from Ashland, Neb., says she complained to cheerleading coach Tina Harris in the past that she did not feel comfortable with the cheer, which is number 33 in the squad’s 44-cheer routine.

The cheer calls upon Faylene and younger members of the squad — including some in the second grade — to turn their backs to the bleachers, bend over, and move their pelvises from side to side.

Faylene, at 11 the oldest cheerleader on her junior squad, was sent home after declining to perform the booty-shaking cheer.

Somehow I get the feeling that Tina Harris is a lesbian. Why else would she be sexualizing little girls?

There is something really, really wrong with someone wanting an eleven year old girl to shake her “booty”. I’m glad this girl stood up for herself... she’ll go far in life. Just a thought.

What the reporter should have included was the originator of the ‘cheer’. Who devised this act for these oh so young girls, anyway?

Why would this not be called sexual harrassment? Is this not a hostile working environment?

Good instincts kid.

No, its not a “crowd pleaser.” The vast majority of adults are absolutely against the sexualization of children, but either they haven’t deeply considered what they really believe, or they are too afraid to speak up against what they (wrongly) think is accepted culture.

Good for her regarding her stance on the issue.

But that said, I think it’s also OK for the cheerleaders to boot her.

What if every cheerleader decided what cheers they would or wouldn’t perform based on whatever subjective criteria they wanted?

Cheerleaders used to be kicked off their squads because they were pregnant.

Smart girl with good instincts. Her parents should be proud of her. IMO the coach is the one who needs to be kicked off the team.

“There is something really, really wrong with someone wanting an eleven year old girl to shake her “booty”. “

So right. I wonder how many other young girls gave into the pressure (peer/teacher) and will be affected for a long time to come.

Surely Katie Couric will say something about this, right? NOT!

There’s a related story linked at the source about a 6 year old getting kicked off a cheerleading squad when the parents objected to a “booty” cheer, also... At first I thought it was a typo, and referencing the same story (Title: Girl, 6, thrown off squad over ‘booty’ cheer.) But no. Sigh.

But what public school uses cheer uniforms with that long of a skirt? On the one hand they push this sleezy cheer yet they have old-fashioned uniforms. It should be the other way around because the short skirt facilitates safer gymnastic moves. The moves described sound inappropriate, less-than-athletic, and just not right.

What did she THINK cheer-leading was all about?

Did she SEE the “adult” uniforms? Did she see the uniforms that the High School cheerleaders wear? Did she ever see the High School cheerleaders PERFORM? “Whole lotta shakin’ goin on!”

Now 11 is way too young to be ‘shaking booty’; but I also think 11 is way too young to be put in a cheerleader outfit and put up in front of people to do dances / cheers/ gymnastics.

Why doesn't she participate in a sport that values athleticism over spectacle?

Since we're whatiffing, what if every cheerleader decided they weren't going to do THIS particular cheer? Then what?
