Report: Israel planned explosion at Iranian missile site
Jerusalem Post ^

Posted on 10/25/2010 8:00:18 AM PDT by jhpigott

10/25/10

An explosion that killed 18 members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on October 12 was ordered by the Mossad, French newspaper Le Figaro suggested on Monday. Another cause for the blast mentioned by the paper was a targeted Israeli air raid.

Official Iranian reports stated that the explosion occurred after a fire broke out in a weapons depot.

Le Figaro also alleged that the explosion occurred at a secret missile site for the long-range Shahab-3, capable of being modified to carry a nuclear payload and striking Israel.

The Imam Ali missile base is located in western Iran near the city of Khoramabad.

Thought I was reading Debka at first. Anyone know how reliable (or not reliable) this Le Figaro is as a news source?

I wouldn't put something like this past Israel given their history.

Goodness, if they can blow up a missile factory, why don’t they just assassinate the mullahs who run Iran?

The Iranis would dance in the streets.

IF it was Israel, how clever! To just walk in undetected and aerially bomb, and walk out undetected.

I tink its very wishful thinking to just blame the Israelis.

But like everything else, all backwards mid
easterners have to blame Israel and the democratic world for their failures and misgivings.

They have a longer history of that.

Le Figaro is one of the two major newspapers in France (along with Le Monde), so it’s not a fringe source — I don’t know what their track record may be on reliability for this kind of story, but I’d guess this is worth taking seriously.

It used to be that Le Figaro was considered somewhat more conservative and business-oriented (for France), more like their WSJ compared to Le Monde (their NY Times), but I don’t know what the situation may be nowadays.

I would dance in the street too! Cuzz ultimately? Israel is OUR canary in the coal mine. Whatever happens to them happens to us, particularly now that we have a stealth muslim commander in chief.

The Syrian’s didn’t know they were there until after they had left their bombs. A attack with stand off GPS bombs could have been made from 100 miles away.

I don’t think Israel could have pulled off a strike like this without anyone noticing. It seems that accusing the Israelis of a strike like this is a very convenient excuse for Iran to cover up their own incompetence.

I recall back during the Cold War, one of the biggest strikes against the Soviet Navy came as a result of their own sloppy weapons handling procedures that lead to a massive explosion in one of their weapons handling depots.

Weapons handling accidents are not unheard of.

I think Massad would have a bigger explosion than that, why take the risk for a small pinpoint prick..may as well level the place...

Ah, but causing a computer malfunction in a missile factory that will lead to a explosion is “doable.” Causing some similar computer malfunction that will kill a mullah is a bit trickier. If it can be done, though, Israel is one of the few countries that has the capability of pulling it off.

xactly! And if the Jooooooos had just walked in, there would have been more damage at more sites. This is an internal issue.

I’d bet the explosion resulted from Iranian incompetence and lack of proper safety procedures. Its brilliant for Israel to take credit though. The Mullahs are paranoid, especially about the doing of the dastardly Mossad and CIA. That feeling should be encouraged as much as possible:

Just before WWII the German’s carried out a disinformation campaign that convinced Stalin that the USSR’s top generals were riddled with western agents plotting counter-revolution. He liquidated the officer cast of the Red Army. That is why incompetent and inexperienced political commissars were calling the shots when Hitler invaded. Paranoia can be used to our advantage.

Thanks for the info on Le Figaro. Sounds pretty credible. I would be more inclined to believe this was a Mossad op than that IAF dropping ordinance. That’s a long way to go for one missile base, unless there was something REALLY sensitive there.

If I recall correctly, it took a few weeks before we really had a clear picture of what the IAF did to that Syrian nuke facility back in Sept 07.

aside from one exception, Le Canard Enchainee, all French newspapers accept government subsidies, and hence none of them can be considered truly independent.
