2 California Democrats declare victory
Politico ^

Posted on 11/10/2010 6:27:50 PM PST by nbenyo

Democratic Rep. Jim Costa has declared victory in his race against Republican challenger Andy Vidak.

New vote tallies from Fresno County put Costa 1,200 votes ahead of Vidak — Costa was losing to Vidak Tuesday by 145 votes — and his campaign believes his lead will continue to increase as the final absentee ballots are counted.

“This has been a hard-fought campaign. It appears that it is now over. I believe our 1,200-vote margin will not only stand up, but will increase as the remaining few ballots are counted,” Costa said in a statement Wednesday evening.

6000-7000 ballots are outstanding, all from pro-Costa areas. Costa's final margin will be about 2,500.

Good effort by Vidak in a tough district!

The longer the count takes, the higher the probability that the democrat wins.

I wasn’t aware of this new criteria for settling the outcome of elections. If the Republican comes out ahead by a margin of victory that’s within striking range of Democrat party / labor union vote fraud measures, we don’t let the Republican declare victory. Instead, we keep the outcome of the election open until the Democrat declares that he’s comfortable in his belief that he’s won. At that point, we declare the outcome to have been settled in favor of the Democrat.

It’s got a lot of merit, I have to say, at least for Democrats.

Of course, the Democrats would seat the Democrat even if the Republican had more votes. Why should the GOP not seat Vidak?

Walsh (R-IL) declared victory with a smaller margin.

In this case, the handwriting is clearly on the wall. Absentee votes coming from the same county do not change pattern abruptly.

good news is that after redisting this CD-20 could be more republican. Word is they going to take out the Dem Strongholds in Eastern Bakersfield and put it into CD-22 (which is not enought to put McCarthey in threat) and put some more Tulare and Fresno Republican areas in...

“good news is that after redisting”

Is redistricting done by a nonpartisan commission in California? Otherwise, it’s hard to see why the Dems would help the GOP win seats.

How amazing. Once again all the extremely tight races just happen to go Dem.

The passage of Proposition 20 means that congressional redistricting will be done now by a commission, just in time for 2012. I haven’t read it in detail, but it is not necessarily a bad deal for Republicans. There might be some long term Democrats getting the heave ho next election just because of redistricting. Crossing my fingers that some big ones go down.

“The passage of Proposition 20 means that congressional redistricting will be done now by a commission, just in time for 2012.”

Great news for the GOP. Gov. Brown with a lopsided Democratic legislature could eliminate 5 Republican seats easily if given the chance.

It is now. Voters approved Schwarzenegger's proposition which removed redistricting from the legislature.

Has there ever been a recount that didn’t give the Democratic candidate more votes than it gave the Republican?

(BTW - I’m not saying that it’s never happened; just that I can’t recall it ever happening.)

It was very, very close. I guarantee you that if Vidak’s surname ended in an l instead of a k he’d have won.

The only direction that pubs can go with a redistricting committee instead of our far-left rat legislature in CA is UP!

You said it all. I watch these old movie classics over and over again and still marvell at the performances. I love todays technology but there are times I wish I could go back to those days.
