The Chinese JL-2 missile has been tested quiet a few times over the past decade. The US knows about it’s existence very well. There’s really no point bringing a long-range missile up close to the enemy’s territory. One the risk of detection far outweighs any symbolic benefits. Two, the US/Russia and China have always preferred open oceanic spaces to conduct tests for optimum results. Besides what would have happened if the damn thing malfunctioned and headed straight for a US city??

The Chicoms may be crazy at times, but they ain’t suicidal.

I think we are on the same page here but the point is that deterrence is just not about numbers but rather about fulfiling your policy objectives. China has done that against the US ruthlessly by building up North Korea and against India by using Pakistan. Iran can weaken the US by subverting regimes in Lebanon and possibly Bahrain and other oil sheikdoms in the Arabian Gulf using the deterrence equation you mentioned. There’s no point in sending the whole of the Middle East to the bottom of sea if one US city is lost. Ultimately, it becomes a game of attrition.

Russian submarines have been plying the waters of Puget Sound for years and even using lazers aimed at incoming aircraft to Seattle-Tacoma Airport.

This is a very good article. Of course the screaming media is going along with the company line, “this is nothing”.

AND we’re selling our chrunched up metal to china, even sent some of our used military copper shell casings, until someone stopped it. In the future we may see some of our chopped up metal come flying back at us, just as we did from the Japanese in WWII. Better we utilize the metal ourselves by restarting some of our manufacturing plants and give work to Americans.

No, the military was aware something was in the works. It was the likes of al gore and the rest of our simpy elected congress critters who have put stops to our protection. Look what’s happening along our southern borders, right now. See any of this administration doing anything?

“If those Swedes ever decide to go Viking again, we are in TROUBLE!;)”

If you form a crew, let me know. I’ve reserved the Viking name “Erik the Skull Crusher.” I can also act as the crew’s surgeon should Alrek the Ax Slayer go down in battle.

Maybe this will convince you:

It was America West Flight 808 from Honolulu to Phoenix.

The california contrail video was shot for 10 minutes.

Not true.

The missile was seen rising and shot for less than 2 minutes, the lingering corkscrew ICBM smoke plume was so dramatic that it was shot for the next 8 minutes.

Absolutely wrong what you have said.

No one has ever stated that they could or would shoot a missile launch video lasting 10 minutes, this is a “garble” of the original report.

See the Jane’s editors comment for more informed information.

Ditto Robert Ellsworth former Deputy Secretary of Defense and former US Ambassador to NATO for more knowledgeable comments.

See the LAX webcam for “Unique. Very rapidly disappeared in under 90 seconds ... like nothing we have ever seen before here at LAX on our webcam ...”

and they have been based at LAX for nearly 20 years !!!

As I have posted twice on FR ... once for the interviews and once for the still photos,

And was flamed repeatedly by the “contrail” theorists who hope to insult the opposite point of view into silence. They trust our ever truthful US government, who have been caught flat footed by this event.

If that is true, how do those homemade drug and gun running submersibles get through. I am betting they aren't all getting caught,

For that matter, on any given night there are so many illegals streaming across the Mexican border, they could be tethered with ropes and used to drag a submarine across the desert and into downtown LA completely undetected.

What you say is true;

But did the North Koreans think this way when they sank a South Korean ship?

Did they suffer at all for it in any way?

Might they do it again?

And what, pray tell, benefits did the US receive from sending 40 ships to India to tag along with our President?

Wasn’t that symbolism only?

But much less dramatic and of much less value than a visible missile launch just off our shores that “lit up the sky”?

Could it be China telling us that if we attack their currency, as we are doing now this very week with O at the big G-20,

then they might some day do this to us?

Just speculation.

The 34 warships report was dismissed as bogus by the Indian and US governments. If the US wanted to send a message to China, it would have sent warships to the Bay of Bengal where China has more interests, not the Arabian Sea.

About China wanting to send a message-sure they would like that. But nobody speculating on that wants to address the risks that such a reckless missile test would have from the start. What if it veered off course or blew up in mid-air or the sub was detected???? Air Traffic outside L.A is not exactly as sparse as that in the mid-Pacific. Besides one such missile launch doesnt in any way make operational sense. A Chinese SSBN would only conduct operational patrols within reach of PLAN facilities.

If I were the head of the PLA, a test of an anti-satellite missile or a salvo launch of ICBMs from sea or land facilities which could target most American cities, would send a very clear message to Washington. Without any of the risks involved in an adventure off L.A.

The North Koreans, Chinese and Iranians have perfected an art-form, stepping to the brink of the abyss and making the West blink before stepping back. The North Koreans were almost certain that South Korea wouldn’t retaliate for the Cheonan sinking for a host of reasons-most important being that South Korea is unlikely to risk war anytime soon.
