People who drink diet soda experienced a 70 percent greater increase in waist circumference over a decade than non-users, a study by the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio found.

This is because the cephalic phase of appetite control senses sweetness and signals the body that food is on the way. Time goes by and the food doesn't arrive and triggers an increase in appetite resulting in overeating that results in obesity.

That’s brilliant. But we need more evidence.

There is a $6,000,000 grant available for you to conduct more research.

Actually the problem for many is the food and lots of it DOES arrive.

I drink about as many diet colas as anyone yet have not put on much weight over the years. Not skinny, but maintain a 33-34" waist. I tend to eat modest fast food portions and snacks instead of endless home cooking.

Agree and would add this is the insidious side of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Aspartame, besides being an excitotoxin also increases the cravings for high glycemic carbohydrates. Those with insulin sensitivity do not suffer this particular side effect.

What a waste of research dollars.
