If we discovered that, you know, space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat and really inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months. And then if we discovered, oops, we made a mistake, there aren't any aliens, we'd be better. -----------------Hard to believe this jerk won a Nobel prize.

I saw more than a couple of aliens in front of Home Depot..speaking a non-local, alien language.

I am glad that the left puts so much stock in this blithering idiot. He makes them look like clowns every time he opens his mouth.

I would not be surprised if Obama made a speech claiming that space aliens were coming.

Shoot-- why not just build up to meet the real threat of China? Why not invade Iran and get something useful done?

“FAREED ZAKARIA, HOST: But even if you were, wouldn't John Maynard Keynes say that if you could employ people to dig a ditch and then fill it up again, that's fine, they're being productively employed, they'd pay taxes, so maybe Boston's Big Dig was just fine after all.”

No, Keynes wouldn't have said anything remotely like that.

If he were alive today, Keynes would not be considered a Keynesian.

Today, the word “Keynesianism” simply refers to a bunch of weak excuses for big government spending, and massive perennial deficits.

KEYNES:

We could have done better if we’d only spent more.
Too bad that only happens when there’s a world war.
You can carp all you want about stats and regression.
Do you deny that world war cut short the Depression?

HAYEK:

Wow. One data point and you’re jumping for joy.
The last time I checked wars only destroy.
There was no multiplier. Consumption just shank
as we used scarce resources for every new tank.
Pretty perverse to call that prosperity.
Ration meat. Ration butter. A life of austerity.
When that war spending ended, your friends cried disaster.
Yet the economy thrived and grew faster.

KEYNES:

You too only see what you want to see.
The spending on war clearly goosed GDP.
Unemployment was over, almost down to zero.
That’s why I’M the master. That’s why I’M the hero.

HAYEK:

Creating employment is a straight forward craft
when the nation’s at war and there’s a draft.
If every worker were staffed in the army and fleet
we’d have full employment and nothing to eat.

Jobs are a means, not the end in themselves.
People work to live better, to put food on the shelves.
Real growth means production of what people demand.
That’s entrepreneurship, not your central plan.

I think the space aliens were already here and administered an anal probe to Krugman to access and alter his brain. That is why he speaks Keynesian.

The Big Dig will be filled in by Mother Nature. The work is so shoddy that I would not be surprised if the tunnels rupture by 2020.

Full disclosure here, I’ve been in the defense industry for 33 years. What we need is called self-amortized debt. You build a coal-fired power plant and sell the power. After a while, the plant pays for itself and then it produces pure profit. Then, you use the profit to build another plant, which is free and clear. From there you continue to invest with everything paid for.

If you build weapons, they give nothing back to the economy. Weapons are a net negative. They may or may not be used in battle but they continue to cost until they’ve been disposed of. Some of them cost more to dispose of then they cost to build. We have tons of poison gas stored in bunkers that is now too dangerous to even touch; let alone destroy.

Some economists are stuck in the myth that the defense build up of WWII is what ended the depression. It was the fact that the rest of the world was unable to produce food or necessities that ended it. The United States exported our debt to other countries in the form of goods and services. Unfortunately, export opportunities of that type are a once in a lifetime opportunity. Now third world countries make their own stuff and try to sell it to us; cheap.

We've been living in the political equivalent of that right now in the United States for the last three years.

KENNETH ROGOFF, PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS, HARVARD UNIVERSITY: Infrastructure spending, if it were well-spent, that's great. I'm all for that. I'd borrow for that, assuming we're not paying Boston Big Dig kind of prices for the infrastructure.

If you want Union Labor you gotta pay Big Dig prices.

The space aliens have already landed, have you gotten a really good look at Debbie W-S???

Employing people with tax $’s so they can pay taxes, actually is good logic these aliens.

Krugman just watched Mars Attacks with the aliens disintegrating Congress and tried to develop a new economic theory around his fantasy of turning John Boehner into a scorched skeleton.

More seriously, while some say that WW II ended the Great Depression, what really ended it was the definitive end of WW II. Unlike any improvements during the Depression, which people could write off as temporary and continue self-denial, frugality and non-investment. By having a specific date, V-J day, when the war was over and people expected a big change and an end of rationing the economy started to zoom. And it didn't hurt that every other industrialized country's industrial base was damaged or destroyed. Maybe we could get the aliens to vaporize Chinese factories and Indian call centers.

The closest thing to a V-J day in our near future would be Obama losing in November 2012. I will be finding a nurse to kiss on Time Square if that happens.

Krugman has been hiding in a spider hole the last 10 years. We have significant military spending increases over the last decade due to the Global War on Terror and the recapitalization of our military (F-18E, F-22A, V-22, C-17A, MRAP, Littoral Combat Ships, Virginia class submarines, San Antonio class LPDs.
