For some reason, this reminds me of the words of Minoru Yamasaki, the architect of the Pruitt-Igoe housing project in St. Louis. Those housing structures were inexorably turned into ruins by their occupants; when asked to comment, Yamasaki lamented "I never thought people were that destructive."

Don't know why that came to mind, except perhaps that Yamasaki is of Oriental descent, like Mayor Quan.

The soul of your community has been on the decline for so long it knows no glimmer of hope or ambition.
