SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Nearly 1 million undocumented immigrants could live and work openly in California with little or no fear of deportation under an initiative unveiled Friday by a state legislator and others.

Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes, a Democrat, is helping spearhead the measure, called the California Opportunity and Prosperity Act.

The proposal was filed Friday with the state Attorney General's Office, marking a first step toward a drive to collect the 504,760 voter signatures needed to qualify for the ballot.

If Arizona and Alabama cannot pass legislation to mirror Federal law, why should California be allowed to pass legislation that violates Federal law?

They already live and work openly in California. Nobody does anything because the whistleblower would be in more trouble than the illegal.

The good thing about California is I don’t think there’s one conservative (or Republican; not always the same thing) in high state office. As the California economy, crime and living standard get steadily worse, the California voters will have nobody to blame but the Democrats. This might provoke such a reaction by November 2012 that Californians will sweep them all out of office. While they’re pulling the lever for state, hopefully they’ll be pulling it for the Republican presidential candidate. (Let’s all cross fingers and hope that candidate isn’t another Bob Dole or John McCain.)

Cut welfare and unemployment to the bare bones and watch how fast real Californians decide that maybe the illegals need to go.

Is California’s unemployment rate so low they can afford to do this?

I wish they’d pass a law requiring that all illegals get paid minimum wage, and fine like crazy those who violate it. Once illegals are no longer cheap labor, they won’t be so attractive to employers.

"They already live and work openly in California."

Yes they do, and at overly saturated levels. Even Illegals that are here, don't want any more coming.

I think as long as a state law is passed in favor of liberalism or political correctness, then it’s all good, even if the wording of such law violates federal law.

I doubt that Eric Holder’s Justice Department would sue California for passing such a law.

The guarded border fence will now be a lot more expensive if we have to now run it along California's eastern and northern borders instead of its southern border.

Supporters say the initiative could generate up to $325 million in new tax revenue from undocumented workers

After Cailf spends that in one day, what do they go from there ? This also suggests illegals currently working but are not paying taxes. $325 million in new tax revenue , will not even come close to paying for all the free medical care, births, lawyers, etc, etc.

The unemployment rate is 12-16% in some areas. This initiative is DOA in California.

This is kind of stupid and suicidal while states like AL and AZ are passing anti-illegals laws. Can you say “magnet?”
