Virginia GOP Will Require Voters to Sign 'Loyalty Oath'
ABC News ^ | 12/29/2011 | Elizabeth Hartfield

Less than a week after announcing that only two GOP presidential candidates qualified to appear on their ballot, the Republican Party of Virginia has adopted a new measure that may leave voters in the state scratching their heads: a loyalty oath.

On Wednesday the Virginia State Board of Elections approved a request from the Virginia GOP that will require voters to sign a loyalty oath in order to participate in the state’s presidential primary on March 6. A spokesman for the state’s election board tells ABC News that although some details are still in the works, voters wishing to cast a ballot must take the pledge.

Why should I be “loyal” to them when the GOP sells me out every time things look rough?

Heard on Faux News this could possibly eliminate Newt from appearing on the Va ballot because he stated publicly that he would NOT vote for Paul. This oath was just enacted on Weds. Convenient? dirty politics

This makes as much sense as gun registration. If you aren’t planning to do good in the first place, lying about it really doesn’t mean much.
No wonder the GOP is in trouble.

it’s a clear move to keep Newt off the Va ballot. Newt said he would not support or vote for Ron Paul. This is a sneaky new oath imposed in Va.

Wow....Old school....I believe in Revolutionary times, people signed loyalty oaths to affirm that they were on "our side" and not with the Brits.

I have a lot of documentation on that on the bookshelf next to me.

Now, here's my thought....basically back then it meant you were a citizen.

Why should the GOP want you to vote in their primary if you aren't going to support the eventual nominee?

The Republican party is just that, a political party. Virginia GOP may be trying to discourage the Paulbot types who will vote in the Republican primary for RP, but have no intention of voting for the actual Republican nominee (which won't be Paul).

Pretty sure you are free to create your own political party and determine how its nominees for office are chosen. Would you really want paulbots, Democrats or anyone who doesn't share your party's platform voting in it?

It will keep Gingrich OFF the ballot. He is gop...Paul is libertarian holding a gop office. If Newt doesnt retract his statement saying he would not vote for Ron Paul...not only cant he vote in the primary...he cannot be on the ballot

I appreciate their desire to keep “non republicans) from skewing the primary....I don’t think this is the way to deal with it. They need to change their state law and have a closed primary.

Even as a Republican I would not sign such a pledge in the current field. I will not vote for Romney or Paul in a general election. I won’t vote for Obama either, of course.

The fix is in. The Party has anointed Mittens as the sole candidate, and us proles must do as the commissars tell us.

Спасибо, товарищи.

Yeah, I get in this instance it is problematic. I had thought Gingrich was already off the ballot anyway? I am in Virginia and I would vote for Newt if he is on the ballot.

Anyway, my general point was that political party's choose their nominee however they want. Some states do caucuses, some do open primaries, others do closed primaries. Personally, I don't think Paul belongs in the GOP primaries since he will not endorse the eventual nominee no matter who it is. If a candidate is going to take advantage of the party infrastructure and participate in its primaries, I think that candidate does have an obligation to support the nominee. Paul isn't a conservative or a Republican, and is just using the GOP and therefore I'd like to see some way to keep him out of our primaries.

Newt’s out is when he said “Its not going to happen! Ron Paul is not going to be the nominee.”

Methinks the Virg GOP just lost itself a heck of a lot of votes from people tho wish to think for themselves.

Let's see some candidates on the list first. It's bizarre to demand Republicans support a winner when, in fact, the Party hasn't provided any to vote for.

These guys seem detached from reality ~ it's the LSD isn't it?!

Does VA have an open primary?
Are they trying to close the floodgate from D and I crossing over and voting for R Paul, and thereby embarrassing them?

Got news for them...They are already an embarrassment.

Allen would be very smart here to come out against this and state that all contenders be allowed on the ballot. He won’t.

What a load of BS. That particular party line could have been spun by Xerxes.

Yeah, democracy is bad therefore no candidates should be on the list who might actually represent the will of the people.

Give us candidates first.

Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot anyway as he didn’t have enough signatures. Remember?

This is a voter loyalty oath not a candidate loyalty oath, isn’t it?
