Virginia Attorney General Intervenes in GOP Primary Ballot Dispute

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is intervening in the Virginia presidential primary dispute and plans to file emergency legislation to address the inability of most Republican presidential candidates to get their name on the ballot, Fox News has learned. Only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul qualified for the Virginia primary, a contest with 49 delegates up for grabs. The failure of other candidates to qualify -- notably Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry -- led to complaints that the 10,000-signature requirement is too stringent. Cuccinelli, who is a Republican, shared the concerns. "Recent events have underscored that our system is deficient," he said in a statement. "Virginia owes her citizens a better process. We can do it in time for the March primary if we resolve to do so quickly." Cuccinelli's proposal is expected to state that if the Virginia Board of Elections certifies that a candidate is receiving federal matching funds, or has qualified to receive them, that candidate will upon request be automatically added to the ballot. Two former Democratic attorneys general are also backing the move, along with a former Democratic state party chairman and a former Republican state party chairman. Former state Attorney General Tony Troy called the Virginia process a "legal and constitutional embarrassment."

Sounds like a reasonable plan.

I am with Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, and not the DEMS. People need more choices not less. To eliminate opponents before the vote is a trade mark of the Devil and Obama.

The jig is up.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cuccinelli when he was running for Attorney General and discussing several things with him. I worked for his campaign and supported him financially as well. I also look forward to voting for him when he runs for Governor.

“Sounds like a reasonable plan”

I agree with that. Having only the two choices to vote for is stupid. The field needs to be opened up.

Rules, schmooles, dude!

We’re trying to nominate a CONSERVATIVE here — not a liberal (Aunt Willard) or a racist (Uncle Pauly).

Common sense prevails. This might help Perry, Gingrich, and Santorum. I don’t think that it will make a difference with Bachmann or Huntsman, who are probably out of it anyway.

While we are talking about qualifying, we need to refute the meme that is circulating about Santorum not qualifying for dozens of ballots. The ones most often mentioned are Ohio, Tennessee, and Virginia. Ohio’s official deadline isn’t until March. (Today’s Ohio “deadline” is a recommended deadline only.) Santorum is already on the ballot in Tennessee. It looks like, given the proposed new guidelines, that he will be on the ballot in Virginia, too.

Simple. Just put all candidates registered with the National Party on the ballot. Done.

You mean to say this development means there is still some FIGHT left somewhere, in at least one state? You mean, conservatives are NOT going to roll over for Romney, at least in Virginia?

Does this mean that there is, actually, a Sleeping Giant left out there, one little band, who is willing to rouse against boarding the trains?

Hurrrahhhhhh!!!

Governor McDonnell is friends with most of the candidates and on all of their short-lists for VP.

He hasn’t ‘backed’ any one more than he has any other.

... the Lt. Governor is head of the Romney state campaign, perhaps you’re thinking of him.

Oh come on, it's a stupid rule that deserves to be overturned.

"Cuccinelli's proposal is expected to state that if the Virginia Board of Elections certifies that a candidate is receiving federal matching funds, or has qualified to receive them, that candidate will upon request be automatically added to the ballot."

This proposal is a much more straightforward, common sense policy.

This is “emergency” legislation and needs Dem support to get 2/3 votes in each chamber.
Emergency legislation goes into effect upon the Gov’s signature, “normal” legislation July 1 (IIRC).

Looks like they’ll go along.

Of course, the media is looking at big campaign advertising money and would have to punish them if they didn’t...
