The remains of a 300-year-old warship are to be raised from the sea bed, according to reports.

The wreck of HMS Victory, a predecessor of Nelson's famous flagship, was found near the Channel Islands in 2008.

The British warship, which went down in a storm in 1744 killing more than 1,000 sailors, could contain gold coins worth an estimated £500m.

The Sunday Times says the Maritime Heritage Foundation is set to manage the wreck's raising.

My first thought, as well. I ain’t buyin’ it. No ship back then was nearly big enough to hold 1000 sailors.

Not really.
These first and second rate line of battle ships were cramped, tiny, and had people out the gills in every space imaginable.
It wasn’t unheard of that these ships had anywhere from 800 to 1500 people onboard.
And conditions were pretty bad as food couldn’t be refrigerated.
Bunks were hammocks strung up three deep or more.
There was the ship’s crew, plus a marine detachment onboard.

This was the ship built in 1737, not the one that became famous. According to Wiki, it normally carried 900 men.

trust me it is big
I’ve been on the one at Portsmouth and it is massive. I’ve been on the USS constitution and that was small compared to HMS Victory

I don’t know how long the ship has actually been sunk, but the wood has got to be in real bad shape. Maybe they plan to raise it in pieces and reassemble elsewhere. This should be an interesting project. I hope National Geo or History Channel does a documentary on it.

Just another thing the stinking rat liberals cannot deny about our early history and that of Britain.

been on HMS Victory and USS Constitution and both are great ship.
Victory is a massive massive ship and if anyone ever gets to England then it is worth a visit to Portsmouth to see these kind of fine war ships.

History is what made us, history is what made how we are and the left wants to destroy all of that for their agenda but what makes us and Britain great is that we can always get up and leave if we are unhappy.
Sadly the left have not figured that out yet

“The 300ft (90m) ship was discovered by the Florida-based firm in May 2008, nearly 65 miles (100km) from where it was historically believed to have sunk.”

Wow! As big as a football field!
