Man Fatally Shot in Dog Dispute(FL)

An altercation between two neighbors over a noisy dog resulted in one man being shot to death Saturday morning, police said.

The second man was recovering from minor injuries, according to Ocala police. The shooting occurred at the intersection of Northeast Seventh Terrace and Northeast Fourth Street.

Police identified the man who was shot and killed as 53-year-old Willie Chester.

The Ocala Police Department received a call at 10:13 a.m. regarding shots fired. Arriving at the scene, officers found the two men injured and on the street, according to OPD officials. The men were taken by ambulance to Munroe Regional Medical Center.

Officers said Dan Daley, 60, who lives two houses west of the shooting scene, walked to a duplex to ask the neighbors if they could do something about a dog in the yard that was barking too loudly.

Officers said Daley and Chester had words. Witnesses told them that Chester got aggressive with Daley and Daley shot Chester four to six times.

Chester died about an hour after arriving at the hospital, according to OPD.

Holly Apolinar, who was smoking a cigarette mere yards away, said she was standing outside when she saw two men — Daley and Chester — fighting in the middle of the roadway. She said Daley was yelling for help, but no one came to his rescue.

Apolinar said she then heard gunshots.

Lenny Martin, who also was outside smoking when the shooting occurred, said he saw Daley leave his home and walk a few yards to talk with Chester about controlling the dog.

It is good to be on good terms with your neighbors. Sometimes it is not possible.

Sound like (I hoping) this was the case of an A-hole dog owner who responded with life-threatening violence to a justified complaint, and was killed in justifiable self-defense.

Question: When the cops arrived did they shoot the dog?

You mean people with out of control ignorant and public nuisance dogs might themselves be out of control ignorant and a public nuisance?

Who knew?

Apparently the guy knew enough to go over there armed. When homie came over the fence to show him exactly what trouble was - he got more than he bargained for.

Hopefully the dog will find an owner who trains him not to be an ignorant savage.

Goes without saying.

Was the victim shot in the fracas?
No, your honor, he was shot a few inches above the fracas.

No surprise this happened in FL...
We were stationed there and lived next to a moron who kept his lab puppy in a kennel in the backyard almost 24/7...poor thing barked it’s head off all the time.
It took us 18 months to get some sort of mediation to resolve the situation - then we moved! During that time such incidents like the owner took a swing at me in front of other neighbors, the cops told us to shoot or poison the dog a day before we moved, home owners asso wouldn’t enforce rules, etc.
In some places, FL is run like a third world country...

It was low class when I visited back in 1974, doubtless
it has descended further into the abyss in the interim..

But I'll bet the constant whining was terrible.

Most places. In the South most people are from the third world. And for those who aren't, my theory is warm weather attracts sociopaths.

More ammo for the “Brady Bunch”. “See what happens when people have legal guns?”

No mention of the fact that it is so rare an occurance.

“Question: When the cops arrived did they shoot the dog?”

You have to ask? Of course, they did. They have to do their duty, you know.

You mean you think they took the dog to jail and charged him for starting a fight.

“where every other house has a lawyer in it...”

Yuck. I think I’d prefer barking dogs as neighbors.

Well, to be fair, not all No Va lawyers are created equal. On Jan 26, I was at my son’s grave at Culpeper National Cemetery. Guess who showed up - his former platoon Sgt. from Iraq. The guy got out of the USMC shortly after they returned and is a lawyer in No Va. He left his house at 2 A.M., drove to the VA/NC border to visit one grave, then back to Culpeper and was headed to Quantico to visit yet a third (we had a bad day that day in Iraq). It’s a 12 hour day and he’s done that for 6 years. Semper Fi is not just an expression.
