It's Time That We End the Equal Pay Myth
Forbes ^ | April 17, 2012 | Carrie Lukas

... There are numerous other factors that affect pay. Most fundamentally, men and women tend to gravitate toward different industries. Feminists may charge that women are socialized into lower-paying sectors of the economy. But women considering the decisions they’ve made likely have a different view. Women tend to seek jobs with regular hours, more comfortable conditions, little travel, and greater personal fulfillment. Often times, women are willing to trade higher pay for jobs with other characteristics that they find attractive.

Men, in contrast, often take jobs with less desirable characteristics in pursuit of higher pay. They work long hours and overnight shifts. They tar roofs in the sun, drive trucks across the country, toil in sewer systems, stand watch as prison guards, and risk injury on fishing boats, in coal mines, and in production plants. Such jobs pay more than others because otherwise no one would want to do them.

Unsurprisingly, children play an important role in men and women’s work-life decisions. Simply put, women who have children or plan to have children tend to be willing to trade higher pay for more kid-friendly positions. In contrast, men with children typically seek to earn more money in order to support children, sometimes taking on more hours and less attractive positions to do so.

Academics can debate why men and women make these different choices. The important takeaway, however, is that there are many reasons that men and women on average earn different amounts....

It's not a myth it's a political strategy.

It goes :

Those Republicans in that all white male party not only want to pay you less for the ‘same work’ but they also want to deny your ‘access’ to birth control, then not pay you for maternity leave, then cut your medicaid and food stamps. Tell them you won't ‘go back’ How?? By voting Democrat.

This is the case they are making to white and Hispanic women, Most black women will vote for Obama no matter what.

Some Dem Senators are reviving the long dead ERA.

They are paid less because they fall for the leftist tripe. If they actually decided to think for themselves and not as a “group,” then they would demonstrate the intellect to exceed the average pay that men recieve.

That is why I’d wager that conservative women tend to do much better than average, especially Lady FReepers!

Why do we have womens sports?

Womens basketball, golf, tennis,softball.
If women are equal let them compete equally.Let them try out for the men’s teams.

It is funny that we accept that women cannot compete with men in sports and yet we think they can copmpete equally in police and fire departments, in State Roads jobs, and other jobs where strength and ability count so much.

Remember the 50ish grandmother guard in Georgia a few years ago who was escorting a burly male prisoner to court? He easily overcame her and killed three people in escaping.

The woman who he took hostage talked him into peacefully surrendering by making him breakfast the next morning and lending him a sympathetic ear. Don't recall all the details of the incident, but it put a double whammy on the lies that women could do jobs men traditionally did and vice versa.

Another huge factor in pay differential is length of commute to work. Guess which gender goes farther, by far, on the average.

I don’t know about why we have women’s sports, but I do know that Title IX eliminated almost all men’s wrestling teams in colleges and universities across the country. And I’m sure there were other men’s programs that got wiped out. So I’m certain the feminists are pleased about that.

I can give you the simplest evidence that the pay gap myth is indeed a myth. The absence of mass lawsuits with women as the plaintiffs. Do you really think the trial lawyers would allow such a blatant act of discrimination go without lawsuits? Fact is, any vestiges of institutional sex or race discrimination are languishing in small businesses. Large companies can’t afford the risk, and are subject to more scrutiny.

Bingo!!!

Obama brags about how he signed the Lilly Ledbetter law, which liberalizes the time periods for women to file lawsuits on the subject of unequal pay.

Also, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 prohibits discrimination in pay.

Based on my decades of experience in the business world, I can say without hesitation that women and men are paid equally for doing the same work, in companies I have been involved with.

You hit the nail on the head regarding lawsuits. If there was rampant pay discrimination against women in this country, Obama and Eric Holder already have the law and the tools to investigate and back lawsuits on the subject. The fact that they are not doing so, indicates to me that this is not a real problem in the economy.

If some women go into lower paying careers or jobs, that is a separate discussion. If the issue is equal pay for equal work for women, we are there.

Women can be doctors, lawyers, astronauts, policemen, firemen, and just about anything they choose to pursue.

The world has changed fundamentally in recent decades regarding women in our world, but the professionally aggrieved feminist lobby hasn’t heard that news.

Good article.

So sick of hearing men disparaged. Men are great!

If the people fooled by all of the Rat lies had more than 2 functioning brain cells they could apply logic to the Rat propaganda. For example, if women are paid less just because they are women and yet are doing the same jobs, how come all the eeevil businesses have not fired all of the men and replaced them with women in order to increase their bottom line?

The issue is that if a woman takes maternity leave, her promotions are “delayed”. That is what they are pushing.

I don’t get that and as a woman myself I still don’t get it.Why would anyone expect to get promotions if out of 3 years they take 6 months off for maternity leave when the males worked all of that time? They did not put the same time in to get the promotion.

We must start at the top!

Term limits for both houses of Congress, NOW! No grandfather clause, everyone now in office can no longer run for reelection.
