Devastating Ad: The Real Jobs Report
breitbart.com ^ | 5 Oct 2012 | TONY LEE

Posted on 10/07/2012 4:47:03 AM PDT by BarnacleCenturion

The ad is titled “Dinner Table” and features a recently unemployed father trying to eat dinner with his worried wife and two kids. The only sounds that can be heard are the tinkling of utensils as the family unnervingly pokes at their food. It is a scene that has been played in real life in millions of homes across America during the Great Recession and the so-called recovery.

After 23 seconds, the ad, which was created, written, and directed by Jon Kahn, then fades to a black-and-white question on the screen: “12.1 million Americans unemployed. Isn’t it time to try something different?"

My heart breaks for families like this. There are millions of them. Besides the fear they have of how they’re going to live, there is the depression from being unemployed that accompanies not being able to find a job.
I personally think companies will start hiring if Romney is elected just b/c they will have more confidence in his leadership.

This is a GREAT add but a sad fact. Unlike the Romeny $5T add this is one clear message... it is terrifying to not know where or how your next meal will come from or if all you count on is now at risk. This is an image of HOPE being GONE.

The number of unemployed is understated by about 50% though according to many of the more often quoted statistics.

Bravo AFP. Bravo.

I like some of the subtle details in this, like that unemployed men stop shaving and look angry, and that all the family can afford to eat is salad.

At least his wife didn’t spill his coffee.

I don’t think there’s any meat on their plates.

That's what I saw too. No meat.

Everyone seemed to be eating salad (iceberg lettuce with tomatoes and cottage cheese), plus a baked potato. Little daughter had a bread roll instead of a potato.

What Obama did was on purpose IMHO.....

He didn't want to just redistribute, he wanted to demoralize us, it was about suburbia getting their comeuppance.

The stories I could tell that relate to this, the people I have met in various industries, and business and how everything Obama has done has had consiquences and has FUBAR'd things to the point where I agree with Ann Romeny that she worries about Mitt's Health. His task is so daunting, I am afraid after the 1st 4 years he is going to look 80 years old, not a young 64....

The only thing I'd change, I'd put a NASA project shirt of which he was on on the Dad.....

It’s far more than 12.1 million. Why are both sides afraid of the numbers?

It is a good ad.
Another good one would be to show a closeup of someone thumbing through their bills showing “overdue,” “final notice,” “foreclosure notice,” etc.

Then show text on the screen, “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?”

That question was perfect when Reagan asked it and it still rings true today.

My mother has green eyes and my father has brown eyes; both my sister and myself have brown eyes. I’m not too sure things like that matter too much.

"Subtle. Not a word spoken. But oh so damning."

The expressions are incredible. At one point, the husband starts to say something, then does not. The wife looks up, expecting him to say something, then looks down. After a few seconds, the husband nods slowly.

The casting is very good. The sandy haired children look like they could be siblings, and bear enough resemblance to the parents to make it that much more believable.

Even the picture behind the mother looks like the son and mother.

The casting, acting, props, and sound are so realistic.

That was like getting punched in the gut then kicked in the crotch while I’m down.

It’s like there’s dozens of separate forces colluding together to keep me unemployed. The last steady work I had ended in March. I’ll be 27 in seven days...

I feel completely useless.

"These folks really use sound perfectly ... It is most effective to raise the sound level for an 'explosion' in a movie if you have a time of near-perfect silence before it. This ad does the opposite - as it will be playing after some very loud ads."

Great point. Also, it is not clear it is a political ad at first, so people are not likely to tune it out.

" I hope they also film a 'dinner table 2', 3, 4, etc., with different actors - some black, some Italian, Hispanic, etc. - so as to connect with each person in the audience."

That is a great idea. Put the Hispanic family version on Univision and Telemundo.

I thought the real (and admitted all around on both sides) number was 23 million. (That is, after voodoo magic counting is applied..the REAL number is probably more like 40+ million).

"This ad was made by a perfectionist. The mother has black hair, but the children have blonde hair. The father has blonde hair. These are his children."

Actually, the mother's hair looks auburn. I don't think the ad makers were trying to suggest the mother is a stepmother, but who knows?

"I wouldn’t call it 'devastating'. It is very effective. But much of that effectiveness is reduced when the web url comes on. If I had made this ad I would have gifted it to the Romney campaign. How much more powerful would it be if it ASKED 'Isn’t it time to try something new?' and then either 'Mitt Romney' or “Romney/Ryan' logo thereafter."

Agree.

Whomever put this together did a fantastic job. The details were...just wow. It gets a visceral/gut reaction out of you and that’s territory that conservatives have never staked out before.

I would add that these are the types of leftists that bombed the pentagon, and planned on murdering millions of Americans to set up their Utopia.
