High Taxes Cripple Hawaii’s Economic Growth

In kicking the proverbial can down the road, Congressional leaders acquiesced to the demand that wealthier Americans pay higher taxes. The higher taxes came in the form of a higher maximum tax rate on those individuals making more than $400,000 and the loss of the favorable tax treatment accorded dividend and capital gains income.

Such a strategy pandered to the majority of Americans who don’t believe they are “rich,” but fall into the great “middle class” which the politicians claimed they were protecting. In the meantime, those very politicians have deferred dealing with the real issue that is out of control and that is spending by the federal government. …

Here in Hawaii, elected officials desperate to make-up the budget shortfall selectively raised taxes, resorting to increases that weren’t visible to the general public in order to avoid mass resentment on the part of the voting constituency. Regardless, those tax increases stand in the way of economic recovery. …

CA is much worse. We are going to be probably over 10% on sales tax alone compared to Hawaii's 1.5% or so.

The islands get 30% more expenses except for what they buy through Walmart and Costco because of the cost of bringing everything to the island.

They also just had the best visitor numbers in the last ten plus years.
I was just there and they are doing fine and there are a gazillion million dollar homes around.

You can't get people to work there. Many are on the dole, yet they claim a 5% unemployment rate.

They are a peculiar bunch IMO. There is a large culter of not working among a large portion of the population.

A friend went to Kona to help repair a client’s condo, could not find workers for help. They basically don’t exist. You don’t find people looking to work, they are at the beach on the dole.
This guy had to fly a worker with him from CA to get the Kona job done.

This vacation my wife and friends went to have nails done. Were told by the owner it was near impossible to find workers and that if they did they wanted to stop working by noon to go to the beach.

Lazy Town.
Then there are some kick AZZ business owners working real hard.

Of course that begs the question why it’s cheaper to have manufacturing overseas, to bring the products to USA and then distribute and sell them here. It seems like Hawaiians would benefit for a shorter trip over for many goods and have a thriving import industry as a result.

Talk radio announced today that while BO’s popularity may be slipping on the mainland, it’s at 82% in Hawaii. Certainly all the money we taxpayers dump over there whenever he flies over has helped their coffers. Wish they would just keep him.
