The islands get 30% more expenses except for what they buy through Walmart and Costco because of the cost of bringing everything to the island.
They also just had the best visitor numbers in the last ten plus years.
I was just there and they are doing fine and there are a gazillion million dollar homes around.

Of course that begs the question why it’s cheaper to have manufacturing overseas, to bring the products to USA and then distribute and sell them here. It seems like Hawaiians would benefit for a shorter trip over for many goods and have a thriving import industry as a result.
