You mean a .45-70 with a felt recoil close to a .458 Win Mag?

Yes, I used to shoot a Marlin 1895 in .45-70 that I loaded up with 51.0 grains of 3031 behind a Barnes 400 (I believe) jacketed bullet.

Used to come home from the range with hash marks on my shoulder. The wife saw me getting into bed one night and asked ‘You’re telling me that this is your idea of fun?’. I obviously didn’t stay married to her.

I now shoot an H&R Buffalo Classic and use a gentler dose of Trail Boss behind a hard-cast 500 grainer. More in keeping with being 67 I guess.

In any event, the metro/pu$$y-in-chief would go home crying if he did anything similar.

with the first factory round I shot with my Buffalo Classic (1550 FPS, 405 grain), the right side of my body went numb. I ejected the round, laid the rifle down and said:

“I’m in love....”

Try it with 70 grns of black powder topped with a .456 round ball (144 grns). It is really a hoot. Slow recoil and accurate.

It’s not that simple to glean much from one image. And quite a number of posters might benefit from further study, to bring their knowledge of shotgunning a little closer to modern times.

Both barrels of over-under shotguns are commonly drilled (”ported”) to reduce recoil and muzzle jump; the number/size/direction of holes vary greatly, reflecting the modifying technician’s sometimes eccentric notions or whims about what will provide the desired effects.

Other recoil reducing devices may be concealed in the buttstock: mercury tubes, hydraulic piston systems, inclined braking wedges; soft rubber recoil pads are the cheapest and most-used palliatives, bolted to the rear end and trimmed to match stock contours.

A light target load in a well-fitted gun with ports, mercury tubes, and a 1.0-inch Pachmayr Decelerator 752B pad might not recoil any more sharply than this photo suggests. And nitro-powder shells sometimes give off a surprising amount of smoke. It’s worse when a shell is fired from a too-well-oiled barrel.

While the President does appear inexperienced in stance and hold, shotgun shooting styles can also vary a great deal and some are highly individualistic (read: incomprehensible to onlookers). Please recall that none of his lackeys are claiming that this particular was taken during an actual round of skeet.

All of which supports the suspicion that this was a staged photo-op, but has not been digitally altered. Or so goes my tentative conclusion, after 29 years as an operational tester, photo interpreter, and intel analyst for DoD. Plus ten years in the retail gun trade, since I departed active duty.

Hunters (and other gun owners who fear icky black military guns) ought not be fooled: our putative overlords have no “common ground” with we mere citizens who occupy lower rungs. Besides, Leftish celebs and other elitist snobs are sometimes enthusiastic sport shooters or collectors, while brooking no tolerance for gun ownership among the lower orders. Steven Spielberg and Hermann Goering come to mind.

Here Mr. President, please hold this gun. We will photoshop in some gunsmoke.

Picture is as phony as his BC.

That gun looks like my Browning Citori 525. I have the left hand model. The only difference between left and right hand in an over under is the cast, or the angle of the heal of the stock. He is shooting the thing like it is a rifle (not good!), with a shotgun you shoot with a more open stance, more like you are fighting someone. The recoil on that gun isn’t bad since it weighs about 8 pounds. Either the bottom choke is missing or it has a recessed choke. It is possible that it is missing as this is supposedly a skeet range, and the difference between a skeet choke and the cylinder is very little. Of course this is a good way to ruin the threads in the barrel of your gun. The gun is indeed ported. The smoke you see is only seen in photos (for the most part). I would like to know his score. My guess is that it is low single digits. Someone mentioned that they thought he was shooting awful low. If you are shooting your crossing stations that is probably about the right angle for the shot. Besides, we don’t know that hit any thing. The photo caption should have been that Obama shoots near clays, as I doubt he actually connects that often.

Whatever....he’s holding the gun like a novice. Bet that shoulder took a bitch load of impact from the recoil.

Hard to tell. My Dad had a 12 guage double barreled shotgun. The first time I ever shot it, he tried to tell me how to hold it so I would not have a bruised shoulder. I was too smart for him and held it like the Wimp In Chief is holding his firearm. After I shot it I had a bruise to write home about and a sore shoulder for several days.

If Obama is using some permutation or a .410 or some manufactured light load i.e. teen aged girl's guage, he's probably OK.

We have seen this wuss throw a baseball. I s'pect this is the first time he ever shot a gun...and the last. If it was photo shopped they would have done a better job.

He still doesn't know the Second Amendment wasn't written for wimps with guns. It was meant toprotect us from him.

Yeah, I’m going to try some black powder this season as I’ve heard the recoil characteristics are gentler.

It’s amusing that this mewling is coming from a former Infantry officer.

Musculature counts for a lot.

Looks to me like a Browning Citori Lightning Sporting Clays model in 12 gauge with 28” barrels. It has the Browning Sporting pad (not the honeycomb brown field model), and a front Hi-Viz bead and mid-bead. It’s not a Special Sporting because it has the low post rib. The typical lightning type fore end as opposed to the schnable type found on the 525, 625, and 725 guns. The checkering pattern is also typical of the Lightning models. Never seen a 28 gauge browning that was ported, mostly 12’s and some 20’s.

Sort of a nice general purpose target O/U (i.e. too short for sporting, too light for a dedicated skeet gun). Interesting that it has a Diana Grade extended choke in the top barrel, but either a flush choke or no choke (bad idea) in the bottom barrel.

The gun must “fit” you.

Absolutely. I had a K80 for skeet that I could never quite get to fit. Got rid of it when I switched to Sporting, now shoot a Beretta 391 in 12 gauge and a Browning Special Sporting in 20 both set up to identical dimensions.

Thank you. I could get as far as Browning, but I wasn't terribly sure beyond that point. I knew someone on FR would have the exact answer, since we have the experts on everything that matters.

The Citori and Superposed are very similar in their profile and dimensions. Citori’s are a Japanese made gun (Miroku) where the Superposed are all from the Belgian FN plant. Other differences are that to break the gun down, the Citori fore end comes off, and on the Super it slides forward but stays on the barrel. The Super began production in the early 30’s and reached their peak of quality (the Grade I models) in the mid-50’s. Citori’s began production in the 1973.

A cautionary note on the Super, in the later 60’s to early 70’s Browning tried drying stock blanks by covering them in salt. The wood took up the salt and began leeching back out later, causing bad rust problems. If you are considering a Super in that date range, look for rust where the wood and metal meet around the reciever. Also, the butt plate screws will be next to impossible to remove and likely to break off. Salt guns can be restored but at much more cost than they are worth.

It was in production IIRC from about 1995 to 2008. Recently a distributor in Omaha had a run of Citori Special Sporting Clays made in all 4 gauges.

I shoot a 32” barrel one in 20 gauge.

There is something about black powder when you pull the trigger and hear the big boom, the massive cloud of smoke or perhaps it is the huge fireball as large as a Chevy Volt on fire that makes you want to stand up and cheer for God and country.

You’ll love it.
