DEVELOPING: A five-year-old boy who was being held hostage in an underground bunker in Alabama for nearly a week has been released, a law enforcement source, citing reports, told Fox News.
Authorities say 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes shot and killed a bus driver last week in Midland City and then abducted the boy.
Dykes is now dead, the source says, and it is unclear what the boy's current condition is.

All I got was that a gun was involved but no say whether he offed himself or they shot him. Sounds like he offed himself.
Personal observation: Far from inter-agency pats on the backs, FBI is taking all credit for the outcome. Sheriff appears extremely relieved the hostage crisis is over and ready for an extended vacation. State police spokesman seemed a tad miffed at the FBI taking center stage and all credit.
Fox News was sure to mention details of Dykes’ military history in the article behind the link (”Vietnam,” “awards,” etc.). So yep, we’ll see a mandatory military draft for all in the near future.

Yeah, kinda wondered about that... were not a lot of smiles behind the suit giving the news conference info. Also interesting that it took longer to name all the people standing behind him than it took for the actual information provided.

Thank the Lindburgh baby. In the wake of the kidnapping, the federal government granted itself jurisdiction in cases of kidnappers crossing state lines. In addition, individual states also passed “little Lindburgh Laws” ceding jerisdiction to the FBI and all kidnappings. Plus, a state can ask for FBI intervention. I’m not at which level this happens at, but the FBI brings experience and resourses that a state may not have.

At least one report did say he had a TV, so I suspect that is why the news about him was was circumspect.
