Royal Navy girl told to cover up uniform on Virgin flight in case it offended other passengers
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 20:23 EST, 8 March 2013 | Ian Drury

For 15 years she has proudly served her country as a Royal Navy engineer, risking her life in Afghanistan when she fought against the Taliban.

But far from showing Nicky Howse the respect she deserved as she flew back to her latest posting, Virgin Atlantic staff chose to humiliate her—by demanding that she remove her uniform because it was “offensive”.

They warned the 32-year-old helicopter technician she would not be allowed to fly unless she took off her combat fatigues and wore a sleep suit instead. …

They told her—wrongly—that it was the company’s policy not to allow military personnel to travel in uniform. …

When I was stationed in Spain in the mid-70s we were told not to wear our uniforms off base or risk being attacked.

Who the hell would be offended by service member traveling in uniform?

What a way to treat a heroine

Evidently she is a decorated hero, I didn't see it in the text of the article though.

IIRC, right after 9-11 active U.S. military were ordered to travel by air in civilian clothes only.

Later on, they were encouraged and then directed to travel in duty uniform as this served both as a deterrent & aa a reassurance to other passengers.

Anyway, Virgin Atlantic needs an attitude adjustment in the form of a military boycott, for a while anyway.

And she looked at the steward and said “bugger off”. (I hope anyway)

I agree with you on that.

Tommy

I WENT into a public ‘ouse to get a pint o’beer,
The publican ‘e up an’ sez, ``We serve no red-coats here.’’
The girls be’ind the bar they laughed an’ giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an’ to myself sez I:
O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ ``Tommy, go away’’;
But it’s ``Thank you, Mister Atkins,’’ when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it’s ``Thank you, Mr. Atkins,’’ when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but ‘adn’t none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music ‘alls,
But when it comes to fightin’, Lord! they’ll shove me in the stalls!
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ ``Tommy, wait outside’’;
But it’s ``Special train for Atkins’’ when the trooper’s on the tide,
The troopship’s on the tide, my boys, the troopship’s on the tide,
O it’s ``Special train for Atkins’’ when the trooper’s on the tide.
Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.
Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ ``Tommy how’s yer soul?’’
But it’s ``Thin red line of ‘eroes’’ when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s ``Thin red line of ‘eroes’’ when the drums begin to roll.
We aren’t no thin red ‘eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints:
Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;
While it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an ``Tommy, fall be’ind,’’
But it’s ``Please to walk in front, sir,’’ when there’s trouble in the wind,
There’s trouble in the wind, my boys, there’s trouble in the wind,
O it’s ``Please to walk in front, sir,’’ when there’s trouble in the wind.
You talk o’ better food for us, an’schools, an’ fires an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ ``Chuck him out, the brute!’’
But it’s ``Saviour of ‘is country,’’ when the guns begin to shoot;
Yes it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;
But Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool—you bet that Tommy sees!
Rudyard Kipling

Anyone have that picture of Moochelle getting off Air Force One looking like a bag lady?

Perhaps this attire would be more acceptable to Virgin airlines?

Were I on that flight, after serving 20+ years, being told to “Bugger Off”, would be kind.

Maybe she should have asked Virgin to cover up their logo in case it offended anyone...

A side note re the "virgin" logo: on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, there is a statue commemorating Confederate soldiers called "Silent Sam" because he is not carrying ammunition. But the local lore is that Silent Sam only speaks when a virgin passes by; and so far he hasn't said anything.

Read the original article and comments. Most Brits still get it.

That's because the DailyMail readership is roughly the UK equivalent of FoxNews or FR. Readers are usually "regular blokes" who are sick of government Nanny. You should hear the comments when they run stories about Zero or M'Antoinette.

Just great. Make her take off her Royal Navy uniform... And then dress her up as a Viet Cong.

If she were wearing a Che Guevara or Chairman Mao shirt, there'd have been no problem.

Who the hell would be offended by service member traveling in uniform?

There are many, many muslims in UK and Europe. Could it be that one of them complained?

Nah. They're the religion of peace. /sarc

It’s interesting that “liberal decisions” are almost always illiberal.
