If I was that student I would have taken another piece of paper and written, “Barack Obama” on it.
Then I would have said to him, “Fine. If you stomp on your messiah I’ll stomp on mine!”

Florida Atlantic “University” pretty much proved it has the intellectual horsepower of a smell rubber band with their attempt to prosecute this student.
Any student there should think about getting the heck outta and going to a real college...and avoid marshmallow “studies”, sociology, and weak intellectual content courses of that ilk....along with the “professors” who teach them.
This “professor” demonstrates that the title means about as much as a plastic “DeLuxe” has on a GM car.
They are just trying to limit the lawsuits they saw stacking up.
I would have written Mohammed on the paper and done a fandango all over it.

It is disgusting that it took huge public outrage for the apology Excuse me, but there should never have been any charges against the student in the first place. The very second he reported the professor’s assignment, the professor should have been the subject of inquiry, investigation and possible dismissal. This is bassackwards.
If the exercise were carried out as written above, it would have been very different.
The exercise expected students to resist, which would then lead to the discussion of why. This "professor" went further, forcing the resisting students to actual stomp on the symbol.
The exercise could equally have been written to put an American flag on the ground, or to burn a paper copy of the flag with a cigarette lighter, to achieve the same discussion goals.
The "professor" was completely at fault for not following the lesson plan as written.
Of course, my post presumes that there is a valid point to the exercise if this were a university-level critical thinking class. Given that the "professor" is the head of the county Democratic Party, I would suspect that his goals were more to tear down existing cultural symbols in the minds of children, not to teach them to explore the significance of the symbols to themselves.
