A question on the Census...
4/22 | Irishtenor

Posted on 04/22/2013 8:31:07 AM PDT by irishtenor

I just received a Census form (yes I know it is 2013)and I am wondering just how much information I need to give the government. I thought that the Census was required every 10 years. Why are they now asking MORE questions? They want name, age, marital status, race, type of house, when built, how many rooms, how many bedrooms, computers, what kind of internet service, utility usage, monthly rent... the list goes on. My question to all you Constitutional Scholars: How much information am I REQUIRED to give?

Required? Nothing.

You think this expense would have been ‘sequestered’ away, but I suppose they have more important things to cut, like the military and air traffic control.

American Community Survey

They can fine you for not complying, but they have never fined anybody. Probably because they have no legal standing to do so.

Reject the "American Community Survey" from the US Census Bureau

Write down the number of people in the household and send it in. (No need to put age, gender, race or other demographic data)

"Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct"

Notice it just says enumeration. Also this form is not an official census but data that is used for apporpriation of funds and earmarks.

I round filed the original form.

I round filed the follow-up with threats.

We pay too many pencil pushers in government, just gathering data with which to micro-manage us even more.

Blather...

Why aren’t the environmentalists upset about this egregious waste of paper? Why is it not via the Internet? Don’t most illegal aliens have computers now, too?

Don’t listen to the ones saying “The constitution says all you have to give is...”

This is the American Community Survey and it is a required survey by LAW. The Constitution doesn’t say you can’t drive over 55 mph, but if the law says it, just try and get out of a ticket on that one.

So yes, they do require this information, but you CAN refuse to give your name. Just say refused refused on that line. If you don’t send it in, you will workers bugging you endlessly for a month.

They get this data for statistical purposes to see what types of housing is in an area, demographics like race, etc... income compared to other local areas. The internet is for structural purposes. But you probably skip that part too if you wanted.

The rest is pretty important.

Privacy issues.

It’s against the law to obtain this information over the internet.

You are “required” to tell them how many human beings reside in your home. The government is not constitutionally permitted to force you to answer any other questions.

Well if its a real census questionaire you have to tell them how many people reside at the residence. Thats it. Thats all we put on our form in 2010. Naturally they sent some busybody woman out and again we told her 2 people live here now git.

Don’t listen to the ones saying “The constitution says all you have to give is...”

I think not, troll.

The "law" in question has no basis in the Constitution - there is NO authority whatsoever for the government to gather the information in question, and it can therefore be ignored at will. Cloaking information requests with the uniform of the Census, and making stern-sounding threats for non-compliance, gets some fools to provide the information, but no one HAS to provide it.

The fact that no one has ever been fined for failure to obey it speaks volumes. The government knows that such a fine would be tossed by the courts, and destroy efforts to gather information via this method.

May your chains sit lightly upon you, troll. Just don't try to attach the chains to any of the rest of us.

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

Just for fun we added our cockatiel to our census form and listed him as an “Australian native” just to see if the census information was truly confidential. No kidding, he subsequently received junk mail including solicitations to join the John Birch Society.

The joke about the bird being a ‘right winger’ was a given!

Are you seriously supporting the government’s attempts at data mining our personal, household information?

The only thing we are “required” to give for census purposes is the number of people in our household. The rest is none of their damned business.

I put the number of people at my address on the form in the actual census, nothing else. That is all that seems to be required by the Constitution and maybe not even that. Any subsequent and/or out of season forms go straight into the trash. They will not attempt to prosecute, no matter what it says on the paper. They will not take the chance that the Supreme Court will cut off all their unconstitutional questions and interferences. They get a tremendous amount of information voluntarily given by most of the population and they will not imperil that by prosecuting you or me.

A few years ago I tossed mine in the recycle bin. Then I tossed the second one. Then the second month they started calling every two or three days to help me fill out the form. During the third month they started dropping by and leaving notes of increasing hostility (from “could you please fill out your form” to “you are required by law to fill out the form...”. Then after that I never heard anything.
