Hundreds of students from Egypt's top Islamic university protested on Monday to demand investigation and punishment of those responsible for a second mass food poisoning on campus this month.

Ninety Al-Azhar University students were hospitalized on Monday after eating at a campus cafeteria, the health ministry said. Earlier this month, some 460 Al-Azhar University students were hospitalised following a mass food poisoning on campus.

Students said the incident on Monday was a sign of neglect by officials at Al-Azhar, a thousand-year-old mosque and university in Cairo that draws students from across the Sunni world.

An initial investigation of the first food poisoning incident by the toxicology unit of Ain Shams hospital in Cairo blamed contaminated food.

In my earlier days in the Air Force, we had this food poisoning episode from the chow hall. The ambulance actually got called out five times in one morning at the school-house to pick up folks. They came to inspect the chow-hall, toss out everything of a questionable nature, and proclaim it was all fixed. Two days later....repeat of more food poisoning. They shut down the chow-hall for four days. It all came down to breakfast pastries which they bought, and were probably way-over the expiration date to be eaten.

The closest building with a cafeteria at USF was designed to win architectural awards, not for utility. In the basement the cafeteria had one wall of windows opening onto a hallway. On the other side of the hallway were two double freezer doors opening into a morgue. You’d be chowing down on a burger and fries with a double side of grease when somebody would roll up a gurney and open both doors. Dead sea turtles and medical cadavers...Yummy!

Don’t recall ever getting poisoned. But about the only thing I consumed there was the coffee and the double chocolate chip cookies.

The commissary has special staling warehouses where fresh food is sent to spoil.

Obviously this cafeteria at THE Top Islamic University practices strict Halal food preparation techniques.

The disease situation in Egypt is soon to become horrific. Because of a botched up humanitarian effort, some 10% of their population have hepatitis C. Because their country is running out of money, their hospitals are running out of medicines.

Soon they will likely be having the “old epidemics”, diseases like typhus, typhoid fever, mumps, various poxes and fevers, who knows what.

I’m thinking more Saint Darwin. He’s a mean bugger.

Seriously, an objective look at Egypt’s prospects is scary.

In Morsi’s shoes, I would try to do something that sounds insane on the surface, but isn’t. To put the military in charge of big sectors of the economy.

Then give them simple orders: Any Egyptian who is unemployed now works for you in projects that will:

1) Strongly increase food production.
2) Get a fully IAEA compliant nuclear energy program going ASAP. Make sure the national electrical grid is functional and will continue to function once it has current flowing through it.
3) Get the pipelines working and restore fuel sales to Israel ASAP. We need that income.
4) Put any rioters or troublemakers in military field camps to await trial when we get around to it.
