Everyone has now heard stories about conservatives whove been punished by non-political agencies like the IRS for their beliefs, but it happens at the state level, too. Back in 2011, I wrote about Rachel Alexander, who was targeted by the liberal State Bar of Arizona for having the audacity to work with other conservative lawyers to fight corruption in the state.
Rachel Alexander was collateral damage in a liberal fight to ruin her former boss, then-Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas. Thomas attempted in 2009 and 2010, with the help of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, to stop corruption by some judges and county supervisors in Arizona by filing criminal charges and a racketeering lawsuit against them. Alexander, a Deputy County Attorney, performed some research and writing on the racketeering lawsuit after it had been filed. However, since she was one of the best known conservative bloggers in Arizona, running Intellectual Conservative and IC Arizona, she was dragged into the court even though she was a minor player in the case.
The supervisors filed bar complaints against Thomas, Alexander, and another prosecutor. The left-wing Bar ran with the charges, demanding to know everything Alexander had ever blogged, anonymously or not, within the past five years and the corrupt liberal judiciary rubber-stamped the charges. Thats not surprising considering the judiciary is under the Bar and can be disciplined by the Bar; so there is no way the judiciary would not do the Bars bidding.
Thomas and his other deputy prosecutor were disbarred and Alexander was suspended for six months plus one day, requiring her to retake the Bar exam again and reapply to the Bar......

Shape of things to come... Well, it’s already here, but it would also make a really great George Benson guitar tune.
We. Are. So. Screwed.
Unreal. Anyone pinged the (Republican) Governor’s office?
The governor’s office is likely powerless here. Attorney discipline is, in most (all?) states, governed exclusively by the judicial branch.
You are of course correct.
Supreme Court here does that. Rachel was the fall gal for the Anti-Thomas groups including some of the Board of Supervisors whom were involved in some ethically challenged issued. Nice Lady, Stupid State Bar. This Bar will take on a lawyer only if: political (not theirs), lawyer stole money, lawyer is on drugs, or lawyer is having sex with his client. That’s about it and the punishments are usually a slap on the wrist.
Where does it say in the Federal Constitution that Bar associations have special privileges under the law? When institutions get corrupt, they get irrelevant.
This may not be solved in the courts, but it will be solved.
Hey, supercat — is there a ping list for such things? This is (self censored).
AZ has a crony infrastructure DC would envy. I got a good look at some of it working at a regional paper here.
Ping to Hildy who may or may be able to elaborate from past experiences.
Nope; they can still be prosecuted for, say, conspiracy against rights which is a federal felony -- the State likely has statutes that could apply as well.
You’re right, there may be statutes that apply here. But, from a practical perspective, considering that the AZ courts have sided with the Bar in the disciplinary hearings, it would be awfully tough to win a conspiracy against rights (or similar) case against the Bar.
“The governors office is likely powerless here.”
Impeach and remove the judge. That will send a message to the state Bar. Then investigate the state Bar for criminal activities.
Conservatives need to vote in people who are willing to use the power of the state against the criminal fascists. If people can’t or won’t do that, then they can get on their knees and be fitted for chains.
