Denver metro area JC Penny stores caught on camera rigging fraudulent "sales".

The video is priceless and is a must see for any current or former JC Penny shopper.

What they are doing is blatant fraud, and it's too bad the Colorado Attorney General will ignore this instead of making an example of JC Penny.

I worked at a major NYC department store while in college in the late 1970s.

We did the same thing. All the time.

Day before the sale, we’d replace the price signs with higher prices for the items going on sale.

That night, we’d put up the “sale” signs with prices often higher than they had been two days prior.

But since we had had the higher prices displayed for that one day, the “sale” signs that said the reductions were from those higher prices were technically accurate.

What a great place to work!

They have been at this for longer than I can remember.

I do not understand why this should be of any concern of the AG.
Is JC Penny forcing people to buy their wares?
Does the AG believe that Penny shoppers have no ability to compare prices once they see a sign that says 20% off or 40% off?
Do these sale signs cause shoppers brains to lock up and they buy regardless of price?
Just curious.

That’s why you don’t go to any department store during the week. Everybody knows that.

Stop the presses.

Oh yeah, we’re also $17 trillion in debt, with $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities.

J.C. Penny is a bad guy? Gee, he sure has a lot of RETAIL company. I thought that was the gist of the free market system. Go figure.

Since when does a customer trust a store to tell them an item is a good value? This is the land of the free. You can shop wherever you want. If you’re smart, you’ll compare the prices at several stores before buying something. We don’t need the government to babysit us.

I remember catching stores doing this way back in the 50s and 60s. I was just a kid but had noticed. I don’t think every store did it tho.

Not sure what the issue with this is. You have the right to be a knowledgeable consumer, just as J.C. Penny has the right to mark its prices however it wants. The Attorney General of Colorado has no legal basis. I understand the anger due to Penny being a multinational corporation of questionable moral business practice, but if this were a “Mom ‘n Pop” I doubt there would be as much outrage. Both have the same rights to market their products as they please. The people, however, also have the right to not buy from J.C. Penny. In light of recent events, I encourage the aforementioned.

As a guy who has a friend who was in retail, I can inform you that this is common practice in the retail trade.

My dad owned a retail store in Spain. There was a box of some items that had not sold in years and were in the back collecting dust. My mom took them out, raised the prices to some ridiculous figure, and put a sign “special, today only”. They were all gone in a few hours! At least she didn’t lie. My brother started calling her “the Phoenician”.

they all do this....caveat emptor....

at Safeway earlier this week,in their discount meat section, they had some 7blade chuck roast marked down 30% from their already marked down price....but the original price was $3.99...which made the FRESH 7blade chuck roast at $2.49 a pound actually a better deal....

watch prices....know prices....when you find a price that's really good, buy extra...

I know they price things up before they price them "down"...

Went there to redeem a gift card. Never saw so many ugly clothes under one roof. Finally settled on a pair of jeans I could have purchased elsewhere for less than half what they charged.
