With Terry McAuliffes gubernatorial victory over Ken Cuccinelli, Democrats have now won seven of Virginias eight high-profile, statewide races since 2005 (three Senate races, two Presidential contests, and two of three gubernatorial elections). The lone exception, Bob McDonnells gubernatorial victory in 2009, provides an instructive contrast with the current contest. In 2009, Virginia voters were 78 percent white and 22 percent minority. In 2013, they were just 72 percent white and 28 percent minoritynot far off the 70/30 split in the 2012 presidential election. There you have the key to McAuliffes victory: Despite performing much better among white voters than the hapless Creigh Deeds, McDonnells Democratic opponent, McAuliffe would nevertheless have lost this election if the white/minority voter distribution had mirrored that of 2009. It was the increase in the minority vote that put him over the top.

The GOP has a supermajority in the VA House of Delegates
There’s no doubt that Blacks and Hispanics continue to tilt further to the Left with each passing election.
But what seems to be killing the Virginia GOP is the growth of Northern Virginia. Besides the fore-mentioned minority groups in NoVa, there are a lot of white government workers who are strongly voting Democrat.
The increase of federal government (especially under Clinton and Obama and to a lesser extent under Bush II) have made Virginia really competitive.
I have followed Virginia politics from afar for at least 24 years and I can remember in the past when NoVa was a stronghold of GOP voters. Now, it seems anything but.
Texas will go Blue next.
The thing is, a lot of these minority voters are immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere in the Third World, who have come to Virginia so they can send money back home.
I would hazard a guess to say that a state run by Third Worlders will eventually start to look like the Third World. I hope Mark Warner enjoys stepping over the flowing ditch of pi9s and feces outside his house in the near future.
Of course, that assumes that the GOP gets its act together and stops the infighting..
How much has the dole and government employment grown there? That would be the most common source of Democrat votes I would think.
Texas will go Blue next.

You mean in 2014 or some distant election?
If/when Texas goes. Turn off the lights.
All those single women who work for Uncle Sugar.

Not demographics, but the mass influx of Government workers who are leaving a Maryland they’ve fouled beyond repair, are turning Virginia blue.
I was in Virginia for a bit over 60 years. I moved a good number of years ago. I still have friends there and the short version as many here are realizing, sadly, is VA is blue except for the State HOR and that won’t be long for this world once demographics make up for Dems not voting. I followed the VA election closely and WAY too many of those House seats were way too close.
There is much we can do, but we can’t stop demographics. *sigh*
Meh. I know you said FWIW so picking on Kristol and not you by any means. Kristol is pretty much always wrong and is grasping for straws here. Warner not at all vulnerable. This was an off year state election. More Dims will turn out next year as the demographics continue to shift against us.
Next states on the blue list ... TX and FL. I may not be around to see it but it is inevitable.
The day will come when the Democrats are down to just one goodie on the tray and both the Blacks and Hispanics want it.
THEN the politics of demographics will self-destruct.
They just elected another Republican Attorney General and returned a super majority to the House of Delegates. So long as the foolish libertarians allow themselves to be puppets for the Democrats, left wing libs will win most statewide offices.
Not demographics, but the mass influx of Government workers who are leaving a Maryland theyve fouled beyond repair, are turning Virginia blue.

Yep. See these plates EVERYWHERE as of late here in N. Va.
My apologies to those CONSERVATIVE Marylanders who are fleeing to other states, however, to avoid the excessive taxation.
Northern Virginia will continue to become more Democrat as the Federal government continues to grow. Five out of ten of the richest counties in the US are in the DC area; they’re that rich because of government jobs and government spending.
