I have lived in Memphis for 43 years. Yes, it has changed, but so has every other city in the world. My children and grandchildren (7) have had a great life, great friends, a great cultural heritage, great advanced education and great churches. We do not live in fear. We go downtown and midtown often. Just this week end we took relatives from out of state down to the Cooper Young area for a Christmas open house at Palladio’s. The place was packed My granddaughter is a professional artist who gets commissions from downtown residents all the time.

If Memphis is so bad, why is your child still living here? Maybe she should spread out into the burbs and see how the average Memphian lives.

I did not mean to imply that it is a disaster, or cesspool, but it has declined considerably since the black population went from 40% to 60%.
Yes, I am sure that the upscale entertainment areas such as Overton Square and Cooper-Young are prospering, but I fear that the overall quality of life there will continue to decline as more of the white population retreats to suburban towns, but that is true for many cities, such as Atlanta, which thrives only because it is landlocked by suburban municipalities. Atlanta proper has less then 500,000 population.

By the way, is it true that the great MLG&W was broken up and sold off to companies outside of the state? That would be sad, as it was considered to be as good as any in the country.
What happened to the National Firefighters Convention?

Remember, I flew out for the last time in Jan. of 2009
