A study of how older teenagers use social media has found that Facebook is “not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried” and is being replaced by simpler social networks such as Twitter and Snapchat, an expert has claimed.
Young people now see the site as “uncool” and keep their profiles live purely to stay in touch with older relations, among whom it remains popular.
Prof Daniel Miller of University College London, an anthropologist who worked on the European Union-funded research, wrote in an article for the academic news website The Conversation: “Mostly they feel embarrassed even to be associated with it.
“This year marked the start of what looks likely to be a sustained decline of what had been the most pervasive of all social networking sites...
The Global Social Media Impact Study observed those aged 16 to 18 in eight countries for 15 months and found that Facebook use was in sharp decline.
It found young people were turning to simpler services such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp, which Prof Miller conceded were “no match” for Facebook in terms of functionality.
“Most of the schoolchildren in our survey recognised that in many ways, Facebook is technically better than Twitter or Instagram. It is more integrated, better for photo albums, organising parties and more effective for observing people’s relationships,” said Prof Miller, adding that “slick isn’t always best” in attracting young users.
WhatsApp has overtaken Facebook as the number one way to send messages, said the researchers, while Snapchat has gained in popularity in recent months by allowing users to send images which “self-destruct” after a short period on the recipient’s phone in order to maintain privacy....

FB is soooo 2008. It’s, like, all old people and, like, “Where’s my marmalade?”
They’ll have the same problem with twitter which already has a sizable adult population. I prefer twitter because it doesn’t come with all the crap of Facebook. Plus twitter has a sizable conservative community.
My kids friended me. I don’t have a smart phone so I don’t do Snapchat or Instagram. I do twitter just to follow Michelle Malkin, David Burge, Drudge and The North Korean news agency

Zuckerberg doesn’t care. We have more money and data mining us is more interesting and lucrative.

The simpler sites work better by comparison on the limited mobile phone interfaces, and fit the short attention span lifestyle of the young. Thanks canuck_conservative.

This is no surprise; a growing number of products (movies, video games, TV shows) are focused on the increasing number of adult Americans that have discretionary income and often have no children. Some video game releases are earning similar returns as movie releases, and it isn’t because kids are buying them. Marketing to kids worked when 1) people had kids, and 2) the kids had discretionary income. Heck, didn’t FaceBook have an app that would block images of people’s children?
When Spanish news networks have higher ratings than “American” ones, it is simply highlighting this demographic trend.
I think conservatives are far more effective at getting a message across within the limits of twitter space.

I agree. Maybe the facebook fools are figuring out that "Big Brother" is watching you.

OTOH, Facebook put the four-page-Christmas-letter people out of business. Howie Carr used to read them on WRKO, every Christmas. It was one of the best shows of the year. This year he only received one entry.

Agree. I follow a couple thousand mostly conservative people on Twitter. It pretty much reads like a newsfeed, with very few “my life is better than yours” or food and pet pics. Dana Perino does post pictures of her dog though.
The geniuses of earlier generations gave us transistors, communications theory, computers, space travel, quantum physics, etc.
The dorks of today give us Facebook, Twitter, and other useless junk.
If Zukerdork was the answer, the question wasn’t worth the bandwidth.
