I cannot get my head around this.

I readily understand a parent who still loves their child, even if they don’t approve of what they are doing.

But to wholeheartedly approve it? I cannot fathom it.

Well, it did say “quietly accepting”. That could be interpreted as “Well, I can’t stop him from doing it, so I just love him and don’t bother arguing with him about this any more.”
