I wonder when theyll start inspecting icefishing houses to see how theyre being heated.
Since I am retired, I try to manage my expenses closer. The unseasonable cold will increase my electric bill, so I only burn wood to supplement the central heating when the temperature drops below 30 degrees. My electric bill will actually go down when I burn wood on those days. The wood is acquired for free. I’m not burning wood full-time although I could.
Sounds like you are well prepared. I try to have enough reserves to survive for 3 months without electricity or water. And like you I have many options at my disposal.
Good luck and stayed prepared.
Nobody would accuse you of not prepping enough or not thinking through every potential event ;)
I've been a user and advocate of kerosene from back in the days when many people had kerosene kitchen stoves and heated their homes with it.
I used a kerosene cooker and lamps back in my sailing days.
On a boat it is extremely safe compared to compressed gas or Coleman type fuel and as you said, packs a lot of BTU's.
Kerosene once was readily available almost anywhere in my area - many gas stations had a kerosene pump and it was priced just slightly higher than gasoline.
But now kerosene is almost impossible to find in bulk.
One station about 15 miles away carries it but it costs about $6.50 a gallon.
Kerosene is available in quart or gallon cans in hardware stores at $10 to $20 a gallon.
I already have quite a few kerosene lamps, including a Coleman pressure lamp, and I was planning on buying a kerosene stove like the "Butterfly" available from St. Paul Mercantile but have hesitated because of the difficulty in obtaining kerosene locally.
Double Burner Stove With Legs $130
Guy on Fox said it’s so cold cows are milking ice-cream! lol
Thanks for your input.
I really liked the LOPI insert that we had.
Yes, we keep water on top of our stove at present as well but the water doesn’t boil.
Without having to buy an ole fashioned kitchen cook stove, it would sure be nice to boil on top of whenever the need arose.
Same way they came up with the same imaginary numbers they came up with about smoking bans............
When raising family we had a wonderful wood stove that heated the entire house. Best heat there is! Used door jam fans which circulated the heat throughout.
Now in my apartment it is baseboard electric...terrible heat source as cycles all the time, which is sooo costly, and never really toasty warm. So after my first winter here I bought two of those standing oil radiator heaters. What a great difference in warmth and in costs. But I miss greatly wood heat!
The liberal husband of my liberal sister-in-law is staying with me for two weeks while he attends a company conference. Both of them used to think I was nuts for being a prepper but they are changing their minds. It is one of those very cold times here, was supposed to be down to 19 last night, and he said to me, “What would you do tonight if the power went out? I said I would give him a sleeping bag designed to keep him warm down to 0 and in the morning I would start the approved inside propane heater to get rid of extreme cold in the downstairs. He shut up.
Night before last he had a new fanny pack and wanted to sew to increase the strength of the belt on each side and he had bought needles and thread. I said I could help him with that and handed him a smallish box that had a battery run or electric plug in, sewing machine. Doesn't weigh over a pound or so and even has a foot pedal. He set it up and sewed through two thicknesses of vinyl to reinforce those areas. I told him if he needed to do anything, I probably had a way to do it.
One time, he and she were leaving and he had a half bottle of wine to take with them and said he wished he had a cork. I reached in a kitchen drawer and handed him a real cork. He said, “I should have known you would have one.”
One time he was here and wanted to know what he could do to help. He's an engineer and can do anything. I said I had a diverter to put in my downspout in the back so I could fill the 55 gallon water barrel, and he could put that in. He did that in no time and said that was a good idea to have to water plants. I said, “No, it would be drinking water. I would put it through my Berkey water purifier and use it for drinking and cooking.” He looked perplexed that I could do that. I will turn him into a prepper if he keeps asking questions and finds out what I can do here.
I have baseboard electric heat which also was cycling and just doesn’t heat well at all.....so I bought two oil filled standing radiators and shut down the baseboard heat altogether. They’ve been well worth the the investment of $100 for both..and the heat not only is much warmer, but I leave the units on the same setting night and day. Saved moo-goo dollars running these little gems over the electric baseboard.
Water in my iron teapot does boil on the stove (Lopi Endeavor). I also have a small iron grate similar to this one that heats the water without boiling to provide humidity.
Just say NO...............Obama never follows the law, why on earth should we especially when this edit is almost criminal.
And chocolate milk.
SNORT!!!
That’s just stoopit
LOL
Gonna be a good day....again....
I’m close to a little town called Athens, where The Battle of Athens was held. It’s in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and just across the river from Dayton, where the Scopes Monkey Trial was held. It’s a sweet little town in McMinn County. Stay out of the cities like Chattanooga and Knoxville. They aren’t bad for big cities but try to get in the country. We are very gun friendly and McMinn County is wonderful. The weather typically is good.
Mine will heat the entire house but to do so the living room gets really hot. I wish it were more toward the center of the house. I have a pedestal fan to blow the heat to the other end of the house that helps a lot. The heater has a blower but I accidentally burned the cord in two so until I replace it I use the other fan. I know; that was dumb. LOL Almost anything is better than electric heat for warmth!
For now is right. They will probably get homeowners insurance companies to verify models and if yours is not on the green list they will drop you unless you switch it out.
We have a 30 year old Lopi freestanding and still love it.
