North Carolina Rep. Mike McIntyre and New York Rep. Carolyn McCarthy will not seek reelection this year, according to multiple Democratic sources familiar with their plans – marking a blow to Democratic efforts to win control of the House.
The 57-year-old McIntyre, who was elected in 1996 to the Wilmington-area congressional seat, narrowly defeated Republican state Sen. David Rouzer in 2012 and was poised to face him in a 2014 rematch. His retirement from the heavily Republican district will further thin the ranks of Blue Dog Democrats. It comes less than a month after another Blue Dog, Utah Rep. Jim Matheson, said his current term would be his last.
McCarthy, McIntyre to retire Republicans, who are trying to defend a 17-seat House majority, say those retirements show that Democrats in conservative districts are growing concerned about running for reelection when a debate over the bungled Obamacare roll-out is taking center stage.
“If it wasn’t clear before with the retirement of Rep. Jim Matheson, today’s announcement from Rep. Mike McIntyre solidifies the extremely difficult road ahead for Democrats in 2014,” Oregon Rep. Greg Walden, the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman, said in a statement.
But departures are creating opportunities for Democrats, too. The recent retirements of four Republicans in swing districts – Pennsylvania Rep. Jim Gerlach, New Jersey Rep. Jon Runyan, Virginia Rep. Frank Wolf, and Iowa Rep. Tom Latham – have allowed Democrats to compete for those seats.
McCarthy’s Long Island-area district is also a swing seat, but it will be easier for Democrats to retain than McIntyre’s.
The 70-year-old McCarthy, who also was elected in 1996, announced in June that she was undergoing treatment for lung cancer. She arrived in Congress after her husband and son were both shot in a December 1993 incident on the Long Island Rail Road. McCarthy’s husband, Dennis, was killed, while her son survived. She has been a key proponent of gun control during her time in office.

McIntyre was a solid- anti-amnesty Democrat, one of the very few. We better win that district.

I am aware of no serious political analyst--Stu Rothenberg, Charlie Cook, Larry Sabato, or anyone else--who thinks that the Democratic Party has any real chance of retaking the House in 2014.
The Democrats will be doing well, I believe, if they can retain control of the Senate; which they may--but it should be a very close call.

It is no longer axiomatic that the majority here on Free Republic are Republicans. I think that here and now the number of Freepers that identify as Tea Partiers is at a bare minimum equal to the number of Freeper Republicans.
As far as Republican we winning that seat, I really could care less. A Tea Partier winning that seat would make me very happy.
If Boehner and Cantor succeed with their amnesty plans, many of us will stay home.
just a friendly suggestion: when posting the name of a politician, no matter house or senate etc. after the name put either (R) or (D). We of other states have no idea who these people are and have no idea which party they belong to. Yes , you did put it in the dialog but more important to put it in the headline. Aloha

I would not doubt that; and this could certainly have some impact upon the GOP's efforts to retake control of the Senate.
But the thought that this might translate into a Democratic takeover of the House is pure fantasy, in my opinion...
Depending on what happens on the amnesty front, IMO the GOP could lose control of the House. Fewer voters than ever no longer identify as Reps according to a recent Gallup poll. Is it any reason why?

There are too many rapid-fire questions here to attempt to answer them all seriously. (I am not sure that you really expect serious answers anyway, as the questions appear to be merely rhetorical.)
I will say that President Obama got re-elected due to his extraordinary community-organizer skills, which managed to get out the vote in astounding numbers among groups that typically are not major players--and therefore are not counted, in the polls, among likely voters--such as young people.
And it is not necessary for that many people to identify as Republicans, in order for the GOP to retain control of the House. It is the reaction of independents that really matters here.

How many serious political analysts were predicting that Barak Obama would become the Dem nominee just prior to and shortly after he announced in 2007?
If the Reps pass an amnesty, circumstances change dramatically. It is a long way to November and political attitudes can change similar to the way the generic ballot flip-flopped after the disastrous Obamacare roll out. The political punditry will react if an amnesty is passed. I can assure you that many of my fellow conservatives will stay home in 2014 or not vote for GOP members of Congress who vote for amnesty.
Eric Cantor already has a strong primary challenger who will be going after him on his GOP Dreamer amnesty. Goodlatte will also be challenged in the primary.
What good is it to have the GOP in control of the House if they use a handful of Reps and the Dems to pass legislation that most Reps are against? Boehner has violated the Hastert rule 9 times.
