SC Pastor Mulls US Senate Bid

A South Carolina pastor is mulling a 2014 Republican primary challenge to U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, sources familiar with his thinking tell FITS.

DeTreville F. Bowers, Jr. – pastor of Christ Church of the Carolinas – has reportedly raised the prospect of running for Senate in conversations with several social conservative leaders. Some of these leaders have passed this information along to Graham’s campaign, which according to one staffer views Bowers as a “credible threat.”

A native of Estill, S.C., Bowers spent two decades as a lawyer before earning his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia International University in the mid-1990s. He served as an associate pastor at downtown Columbia, S.C.’s prestigious (and politically connected) First Presbyterian Church prior to becoming the lead pastor at Christ Church.

A gifted orator, Bowers’ political ideology is unknown. Assuming he enters the race, though, he would find plenty of competition for evangelical votes as three of Graham’s four announced primary challengers wear their social conservatism on their sleeves.

Bowers did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on his 2014 intentions

This worries me. Ideology unknown and those he talks to communicate with Graham's office?? He may be a Graham shill so that even if Graham gets below 50% and Bowers comes in 2nd, Graham would win the runoff. We'll see.

We don’t need another horse in this race...keep diluting the field and Graham will win in name recognition alone.

How many does this make now challenging Graham in the Primary? The more the merrier. SC has a run-off, if no candidate gets 50%, does it not?

Doesn’t he have to get 50% to avoid a run-off?

Yes, absolutely the more the merrier. My worry is that Graham is trying to fix the game so that even if there is a runoff, the 2nd person would be beatable. And a well known pastor whose contacts are in communication with the Graham campaign gets my antennae working.

I’ll wait and see but I’m suspicious. If he’s a legitimate conservative who can beat Graham and be a good senator, great! But we want to be sure that the 2nd person in the primary can defeat Graham in a runoff.
