The NSA and its British counterpart are tapping popular smartphone apps such as Angry Birds to peek into the tremendous amounts of very personal data those bits of software collect -- including age, location, sex and even sexual preferences, according to new reports from the New York Times and The Guardian.
Citing confidential documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden, the reports detail efforts to supplement data collection from cell phone carriers and smartphones by tapping into “leaky” apps themselves.
“Some apps, the documents state, can share users' most sensitive information such as sexual orientation – and one app recorded in the material even sends specific sexual preferences such as whether or not the user may be a swinger,” the Guardian said.

Music, Browser, GPS/ map, remote control, calendar, video player, ebook reader, cloud reader, photo gallery are apps I use about every day and a dozen more I’ll use over the course of a week. I may make a couple of phone calls in a week. Without the apps, I probably wouldn’t even bother carrying a phone.

There sure seem to be a lot of updates. Probably written in the fine print somewhere, they allow themselves to collect information.
Dictators are obsessed with a deep mistrust for the folks. They are afraid of losing their power, so they harass anyone who poses a threat.
I don't fear the apps, I just don't need any. I seldom carry my cell phone but I should and it's not an iphone. It can hook to the internet but I didn't pay for that service so can't do that.
If I had my way, there would be no phones for all they do is interrupt me. I have an unlisted no. for house phone and only family has my cell phone number. Hmm, basically I reject society. Call me John Galt. :o)

it is in the first screen before you even download the app. it says:
This app needs full access to storage card. Needs access to add, delete or modify data on storage card.
I guess that South Park episode about people not reading the terms and conditions statement wasn't too far off the mark.

No, the intelligence apparatus will have left itself in ashes, since they are the ones who decided to leave themselves open to this kind of blowback. They’re supposed to try to foresee the consequences if operations become public, then factor that into their decisions of whether to go ahead with them, and if so, how to compartmentalize and minimize the damage from exposure. They failed epically to do that, and now they are suffering the consequences.
...and AND, it’s not like the US government was not warned...
