In response to Three Prominent Bankers Found Dead From Apparent Suicides Inside A Week:

On Monday I reported on the odd rash of suicides by financial execs in just the span of a week. There's one more rather grisly death to add to the growing list. Following the apparent suicides of 2 London bankers and a former Fed economist in the US, the Denver Post is reporting that Richard Talley, founder and CEO of American Title, was found dead in his home from self-inflicted nail-gun wounds.

They have safety mechanisms that can be removed or damaged. Usually one shot per pull OR depression of the gun tip. Some framing guns are made to do double shots. To put one in perspective my biggest framing gun can bury a 3.5 in nail in concrete.

"Reminds of one of the people in the Billy Sol Estes case in the 60s who shot himself multiple times with a bolt action rifle"

I'm reminded of the 2 Arkansas State Troopers who killed themselves in cemeteries who shot themselves in the back of the head with shotguns. Both had been Governor Clinton bodyguards.

Just out of curiosity, does a nail gun continue to fire if you hold the trigger down or is it single shot device requiring a finger pull for each nail?

One pull of the trigger, one nail.

Being killed by 7 or 8 shots from a nail gun sounds more like a hit job / retribution by cartel members or the mob.

Nail guns come in two styles: air compressor powered or flammable gas powered.

The compressor powered ones can fire one after the other, sem-auto (one per trigger pull or one for every time the ‘nose’ of the gun touches the surface to be nailed.) As long as the compressor has enough pressure, you can ‘fire’ one after the other until the nail magazine is empty. But ONE at a time, NOT full auto unless modified by the user. Some roofers and crazy framers mod their nail guns, but it takes some work to do it. If you have ever listened to roofers putting shingles on a roof, you have heard what I am talking about - the pop pop pop, ... pop, pop, pop, pop as they nail a course of shingles down.

This is NOT full auto, and requires a compressor powered gun - the ones with the hose attached. I have three of these in various sizes, used for trim work - like molding and casing.

The gas-explosion powered ones - I am partial to the Paslode brand - work MUCH slower on repeat fires. You push the nose down on the work, butane or propane gas fills a small combustion chamber, you pull the trigger and the battery makes a spark that explodes the gas and the nail is powered into the wood or concrete. These I use for Framing/ rough in construction where maneuverability and power and portability are the key factors. You CANNOT in my experience rapid fire these devices because you cannot charge the compression chamber quickly.

Now I take care of my tools and have had mine for some years - like 2 - 10 years, so my knowledge may be outdated a bit, but I betcha the core truth remains: to repeatedly shoot your self with a nail gun requires determination, so to speak.

Other tool guys should chime in as well.

It’s the Prominent Banker Apparent Suicide Virus. It is transmitted by large sums of money and reaching epidemic proportions.

A nail gun has a protrusion that must be depressed when the trigger is pulled. If not pressed against something it will not fire.

hmmm. I’d like to know the name of the brand that allows full auto. Meaning hold the nose down, with tigger pulled, and it auto-fires nails.

I cannot think of a construction application where this makes sense.

I *DO* know about nail guns that fire every time the nose is depressed, or every time you pull the trigger, but frankly I cannot think of anything I have built, framed, joined, laid, finished ... where I would WANT full auto - fire nails or staples until I let go

Isn’t this the 5th financial suicide? There are 4 others who committed “suicide.” Strange.

Been there, almost done that - except it involved my Wolverine work boot. GEESH it was hard to get my boot loose from that cement coated sinker (framing nail).

Even wiring the safety back, I couldn’t make my butane powered Paslode auto-fire. Ya just can’t get repeated explosions to fire the nails.

Sure, with a compressor-powered framing nailer, but did this guy own one? know how to use it? etc etc.

Just to understand, I’d like to know more about the crime scene and the tools involved.

exactly!

Now just to prove or disprove my hypothesis - when you are doing flooring - sub or finish, and are ‘cruising’ with your nailer, I *presume* you have a good honkin’ worksite air compressor powering that gun - not just your little pancake compressor.

Or have the butane nailers progressed to ‘cruising’?

Be good to know. I am old school with my Paslode butane framers ;-)

Just curious - is that an air gun or a butane gun? (for concrete)

Never used an air gun for driving concrete nails - only the “.22” powered single shot or the big Paslode butane powered framer.

Just curious. THanks
