Houston braces for invasion of 'Crazy Ants'
Fox News ^ | March 26, 2014 | Robert Gearty

This is one horror film plot that may be all too real: Billions of voracious ants are about to descend on the Houston area, destroying entire homes and anything else that gets in their way.

Rasberry Crazy Ants, even more destructive and mobile than their angry cousins, fire ants, are just weeks away from descending on the largest city in Texas. Since 2008, the ants, which entomologists believe came to Texas from South America aboard a cargo ship in the 1930s, have expanded their presence to 27 counties from just eight. Once in a home, they zero in on electrical systems, chewing through insulation and causing short circuits and general havoc.

“I’ve been in houses where every time you took a step you’d literally be stepping on thousands of ants with each step,” exterminator Tom Rasberry told FoxNews.com.

The hairy, reddish-brown ant is named after Rasberry because he was the first one to spot the insect in a Houston suburb in 2002. The ant, also known as the Tawny Crazy Ant, is even known to fight the fierce-stinging fire ant, another Texas scourge. Dormant until late April, Rasberry Crazy Ants thrive as temperatures heat up, prompting fears of a new advance in the coming weeks.

Saturday afternoon... Creature Double Feature on the UHF stations... Late night Fridays - Chiller Theater, Horror Theater...

It was great!

I LOVED the original War of the Worlds too... scared the crap out of me when I was little. The green death X-ray from the Martian ships, the sound effects... it wasn’t real sophisticated special effects like today, but for it’s time, it was amazing.

Loved Ray Harryhausen’s monster too - Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, 20 Million Miles to Earth, the Sinbad monsters...

Great imaginative stuff for kids!

I probably better buy a couple of year’s worth. It doesn’t take much. Thanks for the heads up.

Yes... but, my FAVORITE feature of my clock was, I could set the radio to play at night, then turn itself off after a certain time.

When I was in High School, I couldn’t wait to get into bed at 10, to listen to Radio Mystery Theater. They played short stories, in three acts...took about 45 minutes.. then, my clock turned itself off.

man... those were GOOD times!

mines was Creature Feature on Saturday on KTVU with Bob Wilkins. There was one movie that stood out for me it wasn’t bug but martians. I remember a scene where a woman and child were involved. Don’t recall if they were kidnapped by this man who happens to be an Alien (not the Mexican kind =) ) They were forced to stop on the side of the road and the woman and child fled but the man remained in the driver seat. He just sat there then opened his coat and shirt to reveal his chest and it gave out like some sort of X-ray of his chest. Have no clue what the movie was but as a kid that creep me out.

The Aardvark needs to be domesticated and used as a family pet and ant exterminator.

You know, if I could go back in time, for one day, it would be to be a 10 year old kid again, and just watch those flicks with the same level of fascination, enjoyment, and thrill that I had.

You could turn on the TV and not have to wade through garbage to find something good. Carol Burnett show; Gilligan’s Island; All In the Family; ... it was definitely a good time to be a kid.

Same here. Watching “It, The Terror From Beyond Space” with the curtains pulled. My mom telling me I’d have nightmares.

Definitely a great time to be a kid.

Thanks again.

RE It, The Terror From Beyond Space:

Funny you mentioned that one; I loved it.

Ridley Scott loved it so much, that when he grew up and became a director, he re-made it in 1979.

It’s a movie called “Alien” with Sigourney Weaver.

Full circle...huh? Cool stuff.

Haven't seen it mentioned here yet-but has anyone tried cinnamon, and or chalk, to keep ants out?

A friend suggested I try this with ants that kept getting into the house. I bought some sidewalk chalk and cinnamon-Chalked all around the outside of the house, under the doorways, windowsills, then sprinkled a little cinnamon on top of it-And= No more ants in the house. I only had to re do it once in awhile and after rain. The ants never did come back.

Apparently, the chalk and cinnamon both clog the ant's antennas, and they don't like the smell of cinnamon, so they stay away from it.

Just Fyi.

Yep.
I like telling the younger folks that one of Clint Eastwood’s first roles was dropping Napalm on a 100 foot tarantula in a desert outside of a town.

I love those movies.
