Tenants Upset After E-Cigarettes Banned By Section 8 Housing

Harrisonburg, Va. (WHSV) -- Tenants are blowing off steam, after receiving a notice sent out by the Harrisonburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority. It details its ban on smoking.

According to the notice, tenants living in the J.R. Polly Limeweaver Apartment complex are not allowed to use Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes.

It is apart of the ban on smoking, which will start on July 1, 2014.

The policy recently added to tenant's leases gave reasons including an effort to decrease health effects, maintenance costs, the risk of fire and the cost of fire insurance.

"The e-cigarettes vapor, it's not like you're smoking tobacco. You know, true it has nicotine in it, but the nicotine ain't in the air," said a tenant who lives in the Section 8 apartment.

He chose to be anonymous, because he is afraid he will be kicked out.

"I mean why should I quit smoking, it's my right to smoke," said the anonymous tenant.

"I'm not in their faces, I'm not doing it in the hallway, I'm in my privacy of my own home," said the anonymous tenant.

He said he's been smoking for more than 30 years and has been using e-cigarettes to kick the habit.

It's a popular trend in the apartment building.

Don Cave who recently suffered a heart attack says his doctor told him, "these things are nothing but vapor, they will not hurt you."

Tenants who are caught violating the 'no smoking policy' will be evicted.

How can they tell if someone is using an e-cig inside their apartment, if they don't give off any odor?

How do "poor" people pay for e-cigarettes in the first place, or regular cigarettes for that matter?

Whatever the problems with vaping, fire hazard sounds like it’s at the very bottom of the list.

Couldn’t this guy say he needs them, per his doctor, the same way seeing eye and companion dogs are allowed in buildings that prohibit pets?

As soon as they run out the appeals process, which should take fifteen or twenty years.

Reminds me of a lab rat experiment. If they outlaw e-cigs for being a fire hazard..they might as well outlaw their Remote controls, TV, etc, etc, etc...

You know that's why they banned bubble gum cigars too!

They pay for it using the cash they withdraw from an ATM using their EBT card.

Remember when they just got free cheese, peanut butter and formula? Now they just get cash. Sick world we live in.

I remember the Township trustees and the Town Board filling their freezers with the stuff.

One of them owned a restaurant and charged .15 cents for a slice of that cheese on your sammich.

Welfare and food stamps, they probably make more than you do and they don’t pay taxes!

When people are treated like children, they will be abused like children with no good reason given.
