Unemployment Rate at Lowest Since 2008 as Hiring Jumps (6.3 percent)
New York Times ^ | 05/02/2014 | By NELSON D. SCHWARTZ

The American economy gained steam in April, adding 288,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent, the lowest level since September 2008.

After a sharp slowdown in December and January, and a modest improvement since then, economists had been forecasting a healthy gain for April as consumer and business activity rose in tandem with temperatures in many parts of the country.

But the good news was tempered by a drop of 806,000 in the number of Americans in the labor force, pushing the labor participation rate down sharply. And despite the fall in joblessness, average hourly earnings did not rise at all.

The consensus among economists polled by Bloomberg before the Labor Department’s announcement Friday morning called for an increase of 218,000 in nonfarm payrolls, with the unemployment rate falling by 0.1 percent to 6.6 percent.

To be sure, month-to-month swings in hiring are a snapshot of the economy, rather than a portrait, and frequently blur.

Want to get depressed? Look at the labor participation rate:

It hasn’t been this low since...the 1970’s.

Er, could it possible be the unemployment rate dropped because the labor participation dropped?

The lies are coming harder & harder these days.

you moron, did you not see the story a couple days ago that complying with government regulations in this country by itself is the 10th largest economy in the world? That’s why people leave this country………

And yet, you refuse to see reality….

No. I refuse to bring back American jobs. We don’t need them. They cause pollution. American jobs hurt women and minorities. We need to ship American jobs OUT of the country, NOW!

From which orifice do these “economists” pull out their numbers?

They don't. They just make shit up.

806,000 dropped out... IN ONE MONTH?!?!?!? At the beginning of the Spring and Summer seasonal work periods?!?

That's a rate of 10 MILLION per year.

The entire workforce of the state of Connecticut disappeared in ONE MONTH!!!
The entire workforce of California plus Kentucky would be gone in one year at that rate!!!

(There are only 170 million working-age adults in the entire US.)

And the MSM, as always, reliably ignores the insane data that this White House is oozing out.

I’m sure we’ve gone over the tipping point where one private sector worker is supporting more than one person dependent on a government check.

Total BS! I’d like to see how they’re coming up with these numbers. What set of folks are they leaving out? What about those ... like me ... who are unemployed yet do not receive unemployment (because it’s a pain in the arse)?

Even US jobs assembling stuff from foreign materials are under the gun now. This won’t end well if it keeps up.

BUNK.

...

This number is complete bunk.

It's the very definition of bunk. "Bunk" should be the Democrats' slogan.

Every now and then they let slip the accounting magic tricks they are pulling. Look for the term “Unemployment claims.” And the absence of the term “Full time.” They changed the “unemployment” formula to 1. Use applications for unemployment insurance as the measure of “unemployment.” A number that will consistently drop as less and less people working means less and less qualify to apply for unemployment insurance benefits when they lose their job. And, 2, they also use the generic term “jobs” to cover that they are now including part-time jobs in the formula. so a person with 2 part time jobs gets counted twice, etc.

Bottom line - its all smoke an mirrors.
